burrowssj
As per title. I need to know what boxes that bolt onto a 1600 cross flow block will fit in front of a mk2 cortina bench seat? Is it possible to fit a 5speed box an modify the stick to fit? I really don't know to much about what fits what and how so any information would be much appreciated. Its been about 6 months since I started looking for an auto borgwarner 35 and haven't turned up any decent leads so decided to go the way I didn't want and do a manual conversion. Tips an tricks would be appreciated
Beaver
I had a normal escort 4 speed in my mk2 cortina. As long as you had the bench back a fair but it was fine. With the seat forward to fit people in the back, 2nd and 4th gear would be pretty much against the bench. Still sweet though. Had 6 people in mine and just had the middle front person changing gears haha
burrowssj
could you mod the shifter to be further forward? Hmmm might just bite the bullet an buy up something
felixx
maybe an anglia gearstick would have the length to be bent to suit your purposes. They are about 5846574378287692566892m long

Valiant
You could make a remote shifter up Or....... Fit some bucket seats while you're at it. You'll need a cert for your 5 speed so get the seats done at the same time.
d.p.n.s
you will be able to use most escort boxs and have the gear stick infront of the bench seat but if you wanted to use a 5speed the gear stick is so much further away then the 4 speed so it would be under the seat. options would be if you wanted to use the 5 speed 1. move the motor and box forward till the gear stick is in front of the seat ( would have to make all new mounts ,alot of fucking around and pretty much just pointless)+ cert 2. fit bucket seats (would have to get seats from a cortina - to save making mounts, may have to make the tunnel bigger, make gearbox mounts)+cert 3. do what jase aka eke_zetec_RWD did .....this and to be honest unless your as skilled as that man ..it ant going to happen as well as making mounts and still making tunnel bigger +cert so if it was me mate i would just go for a nice escort 4 speed, move the seat back as far as you can or heat and bent the gearstick. and look for a 3.5 diff and thats it mate ....would probly get away without a cert aswell and it would be nice on the open road. hope that hepls mate dan
burrowssj
thanks for that Dan. I will go with the escort box. I do have the larger auto tunnel though but yea the whole point of this car is the bench seat so I won't be removing it. Now I just need a gearbox, clutch an clutch setup, driveshaft and diff. Actually got a guy on trademe who thinks he got the perfect gearbox for me so i'll give him a call today
Horse25
hey i maybe able to help you with some parts, how much are spending on the "perfect" escort box? what ratio diff are you after?
burrowssj
what parts do you have? Its only an old rusty cortina cruiser not looking to make it fast or racey just what ever gets it moving. Its suppose to be my sunday driver
d.p.n.s
i think dave(horse 25) has more parts then ford so he may have all you need.haha
Unclejake
An early Mk1 Cortina, three rail, non-remote, floor change gearbox might do it. The lever comes out several inches forward of the Escort boxes
felixx
ummm Horse.. that box you sent me a picture of may be one of these^ edit: It is a mk1 gearbox. Is this what you mean UJ?
burrowssj
Spoke to a man named Nick today, he thinks he has a flywheel and clutch and a mk1 floor change box(one like in that picture) will be seeing him in the next week or 2 -he also thinks my drive shaft will be the correct length which would be a bonus! Just need clutch cylinders and a pedal box and probably a starter motor unless I can use the auto bell housing? I'm excited about this car again yay
felixx
the one in the pic has the slave sylinder attached, master cyl, get one from BNT for $50ish (they use em on trailers). as for the clutch line, there is an anglia one on ebay.co.uk at the moment, should be similar length. Valiant
Be carefull also, Escort boxes are cable clutch, Mk2 Cortina is hydraulic. I think Escort boxes sit on a different rear mount too. Can you find a manual Mk2 Cortina wreck and take everything you need from that? It would be easier than mix and matching parts. Don't worry to much about hydraulic lines it's easy to make something up.
burrowssj
Cheers will keep that in mind if I don't get this cortina box. Hmmm I never thought about mounting points so will have to have a look as to weither anything needs to be changed. Is there any benefits between the cable clutch and hydraulic clutch? I just happen to have a fully driveable manual column shift dereg cortina in my driveway. But its not mine and its to good to part out. Would only take some rust repairs to get it close to road legal.Unfortunately I have to piece things together at this stage
