RaZ
Hey guys. Got a Mk2 Escort from my parents for my 16th birthday and is currently in the process of being painted. It has a stock 1600 engine with crossflow. Was wondering Is there anything I can do to make this badboy go quicker etc. Would post some pics but its at the paint shop. RaZ
How deep are your pockets Depends. Not looking at a imediate engine overhaul. Just bought a new filter and points and a new clutch disk. Just wondering what I could do with it. Also like the Idea of putting a cossie in it

My name is Russell
1600 is way cooler than a boat anchor off a pinto Side draft, cams, lighten stuff. Few projects on here you could look at for insperation viewtopic.php?f=17&t=3909&start=

Testament
As above - I would keep the crossflow engine (it's the engine type, not something it has - means the inlet is on one side of the engine and exahust on the other, flow going across, as opposed to the earlier ford cortina? engines which were of the non-crossflow type with inlet and exhaust on the same side of the engine. crosslfow (with twin sidedrafts) non crossflow with you being young and still learning I wouldn't get carried away with too much thats going to put the car in a non driveable state for any length of time. Also wouldnt get carried away spending precious pingers on stuff that your not going to get benefit from relatively shortly (like a major engine conversion) also any major power upgrades will make it hard to insure. I would look at -learn the general ins and outs, setting timing, changing all the filters etc. setting points gaps, setting the idle on the carb, changing gearbox and diff oil. basically understanding how/why everything works on your car -fit nice new shocks and new suspension bushes and steering balljoints etc. to get the car feeling nice to drive -finding some sweet wheels and getting a nice wheel/tyre combo going. -depending what you like looking for some cool period accessories, rally driving lights, roofracks, chin spoiler, tasteful decals -some lowering -getting some nice extractors/exhaust (tucked up close to the floorpan for more lowage possibilities) -later fitting some different carburation for improve performance (DGAV/twin sidedrafts/bike carbs like retep130) -cam change but dont go wild if the engine isnt high compression

RaZ
Thanks for the advice. Luckily my dad is an avid classic car collector with a collection and knows the ins and outs. BTW are the twin sidedrafts those two big oval shapes on the left hand side?
Beaver
those are the air filters, which are attached to the twin sidedrafts

sholdowa
Glad someone mentioned BRAKES as the first thing to upgrade... You can get into so much trouble with a standard 1600 crossflow. Don't worry about more power, just work on stopping, steering, suspension first. Cheers, Steve
J-W-G
1300 pistons to up compression 234 cam Side draughts or a DGAV And boom your away engine wise
