M_C
The gearbox was in the car when I got it and I haven't touched. Didn't bother checking the oil as I figured it should be fine and was going to replace the gearbox anyway. Douh. Another lesson learned. Noise was scary bad when we got back to my garage so have started pulling it out. Mostly by drinking beer and talking about it...

Cheers, I managed to contact him and get the toyota part number for the bush. Nice. Would like a short shift. But spending the toy money getting her going first. A short shift is on the nice list, not critical list. The nice list is pretty long...
NaN
shift it up, mate, I promise you will NOT regret it. think 1 inch from 1st to 2nd, then half an inch across to 3rd, and up half an inch. It feels amazing. So tight. and thats, at the end of a foot long shifter which puts the shifter about steering wheel height.

NaN
wooooah, those bolts you've got hold the flywheel in place, I really strongly suspect they are too weak for the job. If they are the ones I think they are.
KKtrips
Totally agree with Nigel - those look like just typical zinc plated bolts - I would be going grade 10 at least - if not grade 12 if you can get em. They are not that much more expensive.. If those let go you would pretty likely loose a foot or at the very least fuck your gearbox and possibly crankshaft.. NaN
they look like 8's to me,
Truenotch
My hi-tensile bolts looked very similar to that, and I'm fairly sure they were 10's.
NaN
The v6 flywheel is seriously heavy, (lighten it!), its not the sort of thing you want to be guessing on, if it comes free its in a position to seriously damage the car, 'maybe' take a foot off,
KKtrips
I'm no engineer nor a bolt specialist but I haven't seen too many silver zinc plated grade 10/12 bolts. Normally they are black or gold. Maybe VG can assist...
M_C
Good point. A loose flywheel trying to join me in the footwell does not paint a pretty picture. Ironic that I actually work in a fastener shop and was a bit blasé about these. They are actually Grade 5 UNF bolts. I had asked for grade 8, but our supplier did not have them. The bolts they are replacing were black and I am sure they were also grade 5 identified by S and three radial markings on the head. I will get the handbag to confirm later today in case I need to replace them with grade 8. UNF comes in grade 2, mild steel, grade 5 (or S) UTS 775-925N/mm2 and grade 8 (or T) 850-1,000N/mm2. I have not heard of UNF in grade 10 or 12? ISO bolts 8.8 are often plated zinc, sometimes 10.9, not 12.9 But never re-electorplate ISO 10.9 and 12.9 bolts as they are at high risk of hydrogen embrittlement = delayed brittle fracture = bad news. Lightening the flywheel comes under my heading of mission creep, mind you so does my new TRS short shifter arrriving today... Grade 5 should be OK for the flywheel bolts??? Thoughts? KKtrips
Grade 5?? Hell no!!! Pretty sure that a grade 10 and 12 comes in UNF cap head screw. I would be using 8 ONLY if you can't get 10 or 12 but would still feel sketchy being as you will fang this around the track in anger... durty
I would personally get Grade 8 at the minimum
M_C
Cheers guys. Grade 5 UNF is a around grade 8.8 ISO while Grade 8 UNF is roughtly equivalent to 10.9 ISO from what I have seen. I could not find grade 10 UNF in stock in NZ so am getting some grade 8 UNF and figure ISO 10.9 is plenty strong. Box qty is 100pcs. Anyone need 90pcs 3/8 UNF x 1" Grade 8 Set Screws Black...?
