KKtrips
To fit the tread under the guard.. No other reason AFAIK.. IMO - They look good to a point then they just get stoopid.
Ridal
It started out as a 'low profile' option when low profile wasn't around. The main benefit is that it stiffens up the side wall something chronic which can be good for handles. Plus it can look the business. Got new rims + tyres the other day... DangerousPerson
Because it looks good. One thing I've wondered is if you have rims that stick out from your guards but tyres that fit under your guards is that legal or does it count as the wheel being too wide? Put up pic when you fit them. What width are your rims? Are they 155/50/13 fitted to them?
Ridal
Need to get nuts and cert for adjustables first. Don't think the current 4x4 mode would do them justice. Yea 155/60 on 8 inch wide. Couldn't have asked for a nicer fit.
DangerousPerson
What brand are those tyres and how much?
DangerousPerson
Shit it's a hassle calling around for tyres. Everyone wants to know what car it's being fitted to "blah blah blah you can't do that,we don't have that size". What would typically be fitted to 13x7 wheels? Ridal
Man I hate that! It happens a lot though. I got a pair of toyo's and a pair of yokohama's second hand (about 7mm tread). What size are you after? 13x7 would normally be around 195/205. I could possibly help you find some after exams in a week.
DangerousPerson
Yeah it's got 215's on at the mo but I'm trying to find 175/50 or failing that maybe 185/60. I'm not fixed on the size so if I can't findwhat I'm looking for I'll look at different sizes. Just liked the look of the 175 on these. mikey
I've always assumed you get less side wall flex. But I really don't know anything...

Simon
I've always assumed you get less side wall flex. But I really don't know anything... You do, much less. But trying to convince people it's safe and has no major adverse effects is harder than forcing a camel through the eye of a needle.
CUL8R
FYI Toyo's mould for 215/50r13 was destroyed in the earthquake in japan, have no intention of repairing nor of making a new one. From memory there was only 4 left in Nz and no more will be coming into nz, leaving Kuhmos as the only 215/50r13..
DangerousPerson
Geez that's pretty extreme. I did ring around to get some Toyo's and Mag n Turbo had access to four only and that was about 4 months ago. Wonder if Kumho will up their price accordingly... DangerousPerson
Fiiiiiiiiiiiiinally got some new tyres. Went for 185/60 in the end and I'm pretty pleased with them. Handles like a dream and fit under the guards nicely. Pics to come.
yoeddynz
this tyre stretch thing... Those rims look very much open and out there for curbing!
DangerousPerson
Yeah so don't let your wife/mum/sister/nana drive your car.
DangerousPerson
For those who are interested. Will take a side on to show the 215/50 still on the back. Doesn't look too bad but thinking of getting 205/60 or sommit but will happily roll with current tyres for a while.
