wickmyster
is a mk1capri face lift 2L V4 diff stronger than an escort diff? as they are interchangeable as far as I know... an help??
peteretep
I wouldnt change it unless your breaking normal diffs or maybe have one lying around, im not sure that they do fit though. There are better things to spend your money on
wickmyster
I am now running a slightly worked Pinto and my diff is already noised and whines.. Would like something stronger so I can tow, my escort van has extra leaves and harder shock, it is a real work horse! I have broken a 3.7 already...so need something stronger and dont want to shorten one of my falcon diffs just yet...that is a last resort! would love a bay atlas, but they are going for mega bucks! wickmyster
I would like something slightly wider also, about 25 ml on each side.
eke_zetec_RWD
mk2 capri atlas? bit wider than you want tho maby
wickmyster
I am not running flares, I have 15s that currently rub on the inside guard on the rear of my eski van when I go over bumps with a full load. I am running 195/50/15s
Gaz
Goto 195/45/15's Cortina mk3+ are slightly wider and stronger. You wont break a diff when towing so size/strenght of diff is irrelevant.. oh unless your doing burnout towing of course. If being sensible then a standard escort diff is fine for even a pretty worked pinto. Gaz
wickmyster
I would like to be able to do burnt outs etc, want to enter skid comps when my pinto is fully worked, but I am after a better ration more so 3.2 or 3.5 for long trips. Valiant
As I remember MK1 Capri will fit but its a little bit wider. You can get LSD centers for them but they are expensive. You could add an LSD to your Escort/English. They are pretty strong. http://www.palmside.co.nz/product_cid_10821.html Otherwise its shorten a Hilux (but I'm not sure the ratios you are after are available) Borg Warner or 8 inch ford. Look in the tech section there is a post about early Hilux in an Escort. Failing that look out for something somone else has built for sale on trade me. wickmyster
Yeah i am on a tight budget (aka at uni)...Found a guy who shortens diff for $400 but I dont know the condition of the falcon diff I have at home...and it is a 2.93:1 might be a bit tall for a pinto five speed escort running 15s
Valiant
Yeah 2.92 will suck. My 265 Val was 2.92 with 5 speed, and 15s. it didn't work well. VL commodore used a 3.45 75 series Borgwarner, you can use that crownwheel and pinion on Falcon/Valiant LSD centers for 75/74 series Borg warner. AU Falcon XR6 has 3.45 ratio but it is 78 series. They are a big diff with 28 spline 9inch axle splines and 4 spider LSD. You can pick them up cheapish from wreckers but there is a bit of work involved in shortening them and converting to 4 stud. I am building one at the moment.
Gaz
Buy a 3.54 escort diff head. They have slightly large spiders so a bit stronger. Gaz
Unclejake
^ Do that, and drive it like a person who is on a tight budget. If you want a long range diff ratio and to do burnouts (on a tight budget) then you need two diff heads or to use more of the head you already have
wickmyster
Yeah, didnt realise that the 3.5 has stronger spider gear!!
Gaz
Only slightly
crazy_rich
How many k's had your old diff done? you could always rebuild it with new bearings and a non collapsable spacer, making sure to set all the preloads properly. The diff you blew was probably 30+ years old with a million miles under its belt, if so its no suprise it started whining. If you are on a budget I'd say novelty of throwing burnouts everywhere will wear off rapidly anyway, I know guys racing escorts with standard diffs in them, granted they do eventually start whining but a diff is an easier swap than a gearbox. How wide are escort diffs? I can measure a mk 1 capri's length if you want? I'd heard the 3.5 gt capri and sport diffs had better bearings in them as well? can anyone confirm this?
