peteretep
im going through the rewiring for my escort, I was wondering what is usually powered by the 'on' position, do I need anything else apart from coil, oil pressure switch and fuel pump? and do things like interior light go in here too or nah? and just for interest, the ignition switch only can contact 2 of the 4 positions at once, so when you are starting, the 'start' and 'on' positions have power to them, and once you have started and released the key, it will sit in the 'on' and accessory' position another electrics while starting question, does anyone know why my starter motor has 3 pins on it? it is a pre-engaged type, it has one large terminal for permanent power, and a spade for the starting switch but also a smaller threaded terminal which doesnt seem to contact with anything else
MACKAZ
a smaller threaded terminal from memory thats for a ballast setup....but my memory is also old and prone to misinformation
sholdowa
not this time. It's the 12V feed for the coil on starting.

It's the 12V feed for the coil on starting. Ballast = 12v feed to coil during starting

It's the 12V feed for the coil on starting. Ballast = 12v feed to coil during starting ... which is why I was pointing out that Mackaz's memory was perfect this time
peteretep
what is its purpose? do i need it if theres another cable running to the coil +?
forced
It's so that while cranking the coil gets 12V direct from the starter. Once running the coil gets a lower voltage from the ballast resistor. Steve
Yowzer
It just gives a fatter spark for easy starting. Not really a necessity, haven't got it plugged in on the hillman and it still fires sweet. As for the rest of the wiring, just chuck anything needed for running on the 'on', and all the less important stz on the acc.
peteretep
ok, i had not thought about that, if i have a gt40r coil, and am redoing my wiring, i will need a new ballast resistor? where do you get one that does the job? i regret buying a new points distributor
thegreatestben
gt40r is internally resisted from memory.
peteretep
it says "12v ignition coil, use with resistor" on it
thegreatestben
lol then use it with a ballast. I knew it was one or the other. Gt40 is the internally resisted then.
peteretep
does repco sell ballast resistors?
thegreatestben
Yep
peteretep
i will investigate tomorrow so i'll have a wire going to the coil + via the 'on' switch with a ballast resistor in it, and a seperate wire going form the 12v feed on the starter to the coil + for starting
Raizer
I would do away with the ballast altogether and run a 12v coil on a relayed 12v feed.
peteretep
yeah but it would just start jumping around inside the dizzy and fuck with the timing and slowly destroy the contacting points
Raizer
What??
Ke36
yuh ballast resistor just drops down the 12v feed so you dont burn your points out real quick
Raizer
I always ran all of my old Fords (and Datsun/minis/Mazdas/KE's etc) with no ballast at all and never once had problems with burnt points.
