crispymk2
Hey, just a quick noob stz question... I've blown up my gearbox and for removal the workshop manual says to drain the box and also the radiator/cooling system too... Do I really need to drain the coolant as well or should I be right? it's a 1600 x-flow & 2000E g/box cheers
Mike-e
shouldnt need to, i never drain coolant when removing g/boxes off any car
Toucan
Think the only reason you'd need to drain the coolant is due to taking off the radiator hoses so that you can tilt the engine back to pull the gearbox off. Im not aware of any other reason you would ahve to drain it for.
eke_zetec_RWD
if you not takn motor out then nah. and if you have a spare drive shaft cut the front off it and use it to stop the oil coming out the back when removing (optional). good luck. Gaz
A reason could be.. Sometimes when removing gbox the exhaust gets in the way, Usually down by the flange so ya just undo the flange.. But sometimes ya have to pull the manifold off to get the exhaust out of the way. If so the crossflow manifold middle bolt goes through a waterway. Undo this to get the gbox out and you will leak coolant. Just a thought.
peteretep
seems odd, if it is like you said meth, why not say remove exhaust too?
sholdowa
It's not something I've ever worried about. The logic must be based around the movement of the engine around the mounts stressing the rad through the hoses. But then they're supposed to be a bit flexible anyway, aren't they. If you've got a pinto and / or type 9, then lowering the crossmember ( put a few longer bolts in ) saves having to take the engine out! crispymk2
Yeah, they say to remove exhaust manifold too but my exhaust bend was out of the way enough for me to drop it out. Nearly crushed myself tho... The jack would only go so high and there wasnt enough clearance for me to lower it off my chest onto the ground... Had to slide myself out from under it! Fuck knows how I'm gonna get it back in again... might have to get it towed after all. *edit: i was using axle stands but the jack would only let me use them at a certain height... not silly enuf to get under the car with just a jack (anymore)... davidian
huh? cant you stick a block of wood or something on your jack? its my common practice lols

peteretep
can you not jack the car up?
crispymk2
can you not jack the car up? Yeah, it was all good, I jsut underestimated the height of the bell housing... Not quite enuf room for me and the gearbox underneath to fully clear the chassis, ment I had to slide out from under the g/box rather than lowering it off my chest to the side, also limited room cause I had the jack (with a block of wood on it - davidian) supporting the end of the engine to take pressure of the mounts etc. Was a dodgy enuf operation as it was without adding wooden blocks to the mix... davidian
dodgy mixes ftmfw. when i was changing the steering rack i undid the mounts and held the engine up by jack and FOUR blocks of wood in between the two. dodgy is the way ftlols

Hrm your right. It was the inlet manifold that had the bolt that went into a waterway not the exhaust manifold.extractors.

Yeah its the inlet that your thinking of, it should have a stud not a bolt, and even with a bolt you wont loose coolant until you take the manifold off the head -the bolt/stud hole isn't open into the waterway
