SYKOV6
yip that is one. ford 8 inches came out in 64-66 mustang 6cyl and 289 v8 as well as early 70s mavericks and 62-65 'compact' fairlanes. NO falcon ever came out with an 8in. all parts are available though a little more expensive than a 9in. u can get ratios from 2.5 to 6.1 from summit racing in the states for about $5-600 depending on currancy at the time. ive just sold my last head for $100[shit bearings] but u can get a good head with a reasonable ratio from $2-500 [rich got a good deal] LSDs are available but cost is high. these diffs will handle all the grunt any of us are eva gonna make. so dont be fooled into thinking u need a big $ set up when u only have 300hp a borg warner lsd or hilux or B2000 will do almost all without problems

Thought you would have imput. Did the fairlane version come in LSD or are the only LSDs for them aftermarket? Diffs R Us can do an LSD head for one brand new. $1000+gst. This diff probs way too heavy also.
SYKOV6
some of the higher spec cars would have had a LSD but it all depends on what option box was ticked when the car was ordered new. factory units are very rear. they are a little lighter than a 9in prolly inbetween that and a hilux. they are a good diff but are gettin pretty old . a toyota is prolly the best of weight/power handling but prices for second hand units is pretty dear
Gaz
I see. Am going to buy this diff if it goes cheap enough and just sit on it for a while. I already have two Hilux diffs which I am thinking about shortening. What about the borg Warner type falcon diff? They seem to have plenty of ratios and LSDs are plenty and cheap. Are they heavy? SYKOV6
dont know exact but i would think that a falcon BW78 would be very close to a hilux and anything later than xf will be disc too
Gaz
Might look more into those then. Can always sell the Hilux ones I have. Cheers for the info.
SYKOV6
why not just use the hilux one u have?
Gaz
Dunno. Just expensive to get an LSD head. I got two hilux diffs. One has no head and the other possiably has LSD but unsure. If I could have my way id use a lighter diff that could handle the power. I want it to handle 350hp max. I might also look into buying a Quife LSD unit for the escort diff and heat treating the axles. If they are good for the kind of power im looking then it will be the easiest and lightest conversion. I think the axles will let it down however. Unsure of how stronmg heat treated axles are.

Gaz
yeah might be the go aye.what about an atlas? Out of the cortinas? I also have one of them at home.
SYKOV6
i wouldnt have thought that the quaife LSD and esky axles would have got anywhere close to 350hp . arnt they only made for rally cars fast road cars etc. even 350hp is at the very top end of what a pinto could make
CaMpylobacter
mk1 capri aren't they? with the huge head, offset to one side etc, named after a weightlifter from the period, who's last name was 'atlas' pretty rare, but hella strong I'm led to believe
Raizer
Iv got a mk1 capri 3000GT diff at my old ladys, there not head type man

I supose any diff will last a while till ya start abusing it. Stll I want to be able to semi abuse it. Ive read of a cossie powered esky with one and it handled it ok. I think the axles will be the weak point.

crazy_rich
yeh man, the atlas out of a mk 3 2.8i special, brooklands or 280 capri is what u want. 3.23 ratio (i think) with LSD. good luck finding one.
Gaz
Brought it anyway. Went real cheap. Might sit on it till I decide what to do.
RT
If I could have my way id use a lighter diff that could handle the power. I want it to handle 350hp max. . I use an atlas V6 unit with 3.22 ratio.. I'm about to get an ATB quaife unit for it and it's prolly going to get 300hp in the face pretty soon. The axles are pretty strong. My mate runs an 8" Falcon diff in his capri.. I could ask him about where he got it etc. oh and my 4.1 XF falcon had disc's and LSD btw.
