  1. Alex, I tried sending you a PM but it says you can't receive any. I'm heading past your neck of the woods on the 30th and would be keen to see your projects up close if possible.
  2. That's some insanely minimal rust. You'd probably get away with just sanding it back, rust converting, priming and painting it.
  3. The only way you will pass that brake test is by tampering with the machine
  4. Mean bogan skids, bro. I also needed a haircut at the time.
  5. Yeah, it took a few tries to find a suitable rotor. The KE30 ones have about a mm or two clearance between the groove and the inner edge of the pad
  6. 77magnum, you can get KE30 ones from BNT and just turn them down from 218 mm to 203 mm. They're about $50 each at trade price. EDIT: Unless you are needing them for not a starlet, in that case I guess getting them custom cast would be ideal.
  7. "common starlet" doesn't exist in NZ. Apparently Euro/USDM ones have the larger brakes. But yeah, these KE30 ones worked perfectly, just had to trim the outside diameter down to 203 mm (200 might have even been better). Thanks for the bits
  8. I've towed a Starlet before... Damn near bent my car
  9. Seeing how it is the car's 33rd birthday today I thought I would give it some gifts. I purchased some KE30 brake rotors and turned them down to 203 mm (probably would have even gotten away with 200 mm) so they'd work with the KP bits. The first few bedding in stops were quite sketchy, car pulling to one side and a wheel locking up etc. After that they got really good. The pedal feels a lot lighter than it used to and the brakes are way more effective. I made sure to block back the brake pads so they wouldn't put grooves in the new rotors. I also gave the wheel bearings some new grease while I was in there. I also scored a tow bar off Malarky the other day. That's all on now and I've also wired up a trailer light plug (not in this image).
  10. When I put a new (literally brand new) 3rd gear synchro in my box it was a little bit crunchy for the first few drives. Then it settled down and it is now perfect. But yeah as k-trips says, check that he put the right oil in it. It probably needs a GL4 oil (like castrol VMX). GL5 will bugger anything with brass synchros.
  11. My brother had one of these, the same colour, about 5 or 6 years ago. He had it for half an hour and my dad made him take it back because it was too bogan.
  12. Thanks Nathan. Going to look at a place on Saturday morning but will contact you if the other place doesn't suit. Re lowering Starlet: Does a heavy weight in the boot count?
  13. Hi guys, I'm going to be starting post grad next year down here at UC with my girlfriend and am currently looking to sort out accommodation. Do any of you know of anywhere that will be available from mid November for about a year? We're looking for something around the $130 a week (each) mark with off street (or garage) parking. A garden would be nice, too. We're clean, responsible and trustworthy. The only downside is my girlfriend has a boring AE102 Corolla. Thanks
  14. Good bye Ralph. I wish I could have known you longer and taken you on many adventures but such is life. I feel that I have given you at least a few more years of happy running and you've taught me some things in return. Enjoy your new home.
  15. I hear ls1's are all the rage these days
  16. So it's now coming to a time where I think I'm going to sell her. Everything seems to be in a functional condition at the moment. The exhaust snapped the other day while I had loaned the car to a tourist, so I had that repaired today. It was awkward/fun to terrorize Christchurch city while I was driving around with only half an exhaust. The only real thing that it would benefit from on the mechanical side is a bigger carburetor, it is still running the original 2K one. There's still a fair bit to be done cosmetically, but nothing too extreme. I still haven't managed to paint the replacement driver's door fully, I'll probably hold onto it for a while and sell it separately if I ever get around to making paint stick to it.
  17. How soon does a diff go clonkity clunk bang bang if you screw up the pre load?
  18. Cowshed acid, Optimum, cleans up aluminium fast and easy.
