Popular Post thegreatestben
It’s not old but it looks old right? I saw this baby while I was in Greece having dinner and thought it was one of those deals which is almost too good to be true. Facebook marketplace, located in Fielding. Mutual friend: @CaMpylobacter. Hmmmmm that could go either way tbh…. As it turns out the dude was a punishing boomer but also a decent guy which CaM backed up. In fact the WOF’s happened to be issued by Adsett Heavy Diesel and the bike was described as minty mint and the price was <$10K with not even 10,000Km on the clock. Arrived back in the country and headed up to the ‘ding. Bike was as described and a background check came back all good too (bike is ex Aus, thought maybe dodge but nah just came over with the previous owner. Rode it home and almost went deaf. Has been fitted with some short shots and you just couldn’t escape the sound. It’s also got some extra goodies in the form of a Bluetooth FP4 fuel tuner, k&n drop in filter and a upgraded h-d gauge cluster. Boy howdy it goes like a champion when you give it the beans but it’s pretty agricultural at regular speeds through out the 5 speed box. Main use is to commute so I really would like it to ride a little more civilised and my 2008 sporty was a lot slower but lovely to chog along without much fuss. Getting in touch with V&H who make the fuel tuner and pipes, they recommended fitting some optional baffles to quiet the thing down but would also give it more low end power at the sacrifice of the top end - Ideal as that solves two problems with one stone! So the tweaks begin:
thegreatestben
Baffles come in two flavours, quiet and super quiet. I didn’t find too many examples or reviews at first but helpfully I ended up finding an old forum post where someone bought the quiets and ended up going for the super quiets and even those were rowdy. Looking at the pics you could probably add some more holes to the super quiets to make them into the quiet baffles. They’re not cheap but convenient and fit is spot on. The cheeky buggers at Boyd’s sent me a lightly used one which wasn’t ideal but to their credit they have sent me another new replacement. Didnt realise there’s technically already a baffle in them when I went to get the job done. You have to partially remove the heat shields to access the button head screw securing each baffle in place. Existing noise makers: Super Quiet: Pretty easy job once I had both new ones in hand. This is the “lightly used” one I got at first: stripped threads on screw and baffle to boot! Quick change of the flash tune to update it with the baffles which is super easy in the App! Haven’t ridden it yet but already noticeably quieter and the tone is a bit nicer but that might just be due to the fact my eardrums aren’t bleeding. The Mrs reckons it’s way quieter from the kitchen haha Have bought a couple new bits of gear to stay safe as well. Carbon fibre helmet has been a great purchase, at 1.2kg it’s much lighter than any other I’ve previously had.
thegreatestben
First ride - SLOW Did make it alot quieter, smoothed out low end considerably but it's dulllllll. It's super slow up top, Might keep these for WOF's and just invest in some better noise cancelling headphones. These are the quiet versions of the baffle, I can modify the existing ones to have more speed holes: 1
Goat
I found that with my Ironhead. Any form of baffles and it loses almost all its power. Rips with no baffles, but it obnoxiously loud. Good shit Ben. Bikes are rad. You going to de-puffify it? That seat looks comfy, but what a big unit.
thegreatestben
Thanks Joe, bikes are definitely rad. It's not super comfy despite being a unit. I think a single seat would be good but also things are crazy money. I did see a peanut tank listed and they do look a lot nicer but also you don't look very cool stopping for gas every hour. Maybe smarten up the rear guard and a set of better rear shocks, can't see shit out of the mirrors when they are undermounted.

I think it had only done 500km since 2020 I think I've done double that already. It is a nice bike, especially for the money. I ripped the baffles back out and the solution is definitely to wear noise cancelling earbuds It is so much fun to hoon with the loud pipes. cletus
are the baffles quite restrictive to get it quieter? have you thought about a 2-1 with a muffler, might be better?
morkster
Yea those V & H pipes are impossible to make tolerable, even with the quiet baffles and smartpartz hard kore quiet baffles combined.. I ended up putting 2 into 1 supertrapp on mine to save the hearing
Muncie
2-1 for the win you can make a lawn mower engine sound good surely some options out there, are Harris pipes still a thing?

I find earplugs make the intercom/ Bluetooth in my helmet sound better with less wind noise. My ktm is loud ish but its enough that the ears are ringing when I dont wear them. With the db killer baffle out it sounds amazing but i cbf with the noise and it doesn’t seem to kill any power.
thegreatestben
Baffles I bought are very restrictive but I could easily make them into the less restricted ones by adding some more holes. Or I could delete the part which makes them not straight through. It’s fine with decent headphones but it’s bloody loud for everyone else so wouldn’t be surprised if I got a ticket one day. the bike came with standard pipes, the original mufflers and a set of screaming eagle slip ons. The more I ride the bike the more I like how rowdy it is though… it does go quite well when giving it the beans.
