Hello dear fellows,

I've recently aquired a boat with an inboard engine powering it.

It happens to encounter dillemas establishing certain elements regarding particularities surrounding the engine specificities in order to purchase the parts for overhauling and tuning correctly.

What I've deciffered so far is that is: - Rootes Group engine, Hillman/Chrysler however I'm not sure the exact car (year, series, etc), due to the amalgam that occurred back then between auto companies.

-Alloy Head (~aprox 81.6 cilinder bore although my caliper may not be extremely precise, but looks like hasn't been reborred)

-3 Bearing Crankshaft

-2 x Zenith Carburetors

-iron cast Water Pump

-oil Dipstick located between dizzy and filter running into the sump

My main question is what is the engine cubic capacity, compression ratio, and any other informations would be of great help.

Thank you for reading my post!

PS I'm new to dissecting a car engine but now I have the chance and eager to learn and get my hands oily, all being satisfying enjoying every stage and aspect of 'garage time'

I don't suppose there's a tag on thr block, usually brass or aluminium with some numbers on it?

Or a stamped number on the topside of the block, where the cylinder head would sit (but outside the area that would be covered)

Failing that, there's probably a casting number on the head, maybe in the rocker gallery that might help

It looks like the tag by the fuel pump has been erased, perhaps to avoid future confusion I assume, some block serial number at the back by flyweel and under manifold

Bugger.

If you get stuck, il give you some instructions on how to bring that number back. But some light chemistry is involved

Wow, that's interesting, I'd be willing to try, thank you!

Apparently there was a marine version of the Singer Vogue/Hillman Hunter engine. But the three bearing bottom end says early version and the alloy head says later. The marine conversion certainly looks factory - but twin carbs suggests someone's tweaked a car origin engine for their boat use.

I would think you were correct thinking it is a Sunbeam engine. They used the alloy head before the Hillman Hunter used it on the 1725. Being a 1963 year engine and 3 main bearing engine I would think it is a 1600 Sunbeam engine. 1725 engine was a 5 main bearing engine.

Or, use the boat in a more stationary capacity.

Say for example to hold other boats.

Possibly whilst in contact with the bottom of the water/earth interface.

Looks like I'm several hours too late to identify the engine. I've worked on a couple of those Sunbeam engines and immediately recognized it. But Ive never seen one in a boat. The poms did have a thing for marinising little car engines. We've got a BMC Vedette under a bench at work which is basically a BMC A series of 1098cc I think. Crank start, mag ignition, forward and back box attached to it. Cool little thing. The Vedette was built in many different marks based off an Morris 8/minor power plant over the years.

Bruce at Mechanical Restorations Vintage & Classic Spares has a lot of parts for them if you get stuck. He's got a huge stack of NOS bits for a lot of pom stuff from that era.
