toy-mota
i have just purchased a w58,unfortunately it was site unseen and was told it hadn't been thrashed.so i would like to get it looked at and anything that needs replacing to have it done....So do i A) buy a kit from ebay that has gaskets, seals, bearings and syncros and attempt to do it myself or find someone who knows or send it to a shop and pay the money? i got quoted today $1500-$3000,a tad pricey for my liking. any help would be appreciated

yetchh
Do it yourself.. but if there's a bolt left behind in the ice cream container you've made a mistake somewhere haha.. but seriously, I'd do it. They're pretty easy, well worth the savings.
toy-mota
very keen to try it for myself ,theres kits like this on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Toyota-W55-W56-W58-5-Speed-Transmission-Rebuild-Kit-BK162WS-/271555771852?hash=item3f39fc3dcc&vxp=mtr but is that to cheap for what you get? im sure if i went to a bearing shop here, the bearings alone would be more . also i removed the tail cover off and the lower bearing is missing 4 balls and the cage was in pieces, also 5th gear has half a tooth missing ,will this be a major issue? just need to remove the front cover now and inspect the 4 other gears
Valiant
That does seem like a good price, I did bearings on a W50 recently and they cost a lot more than that from the local bearing suppliers. Even at trade. You'll be able to get a replacement gear through Toyota.
yoeddynz
Do it yourself. Fun times learning and people are here to help. yeah when sourcing bearings etc for my mazda box no one in nz could get even close to the price of parts landed from the US.
