0R10N
I originally posted this in spam thread but as always it got lost in the chaos. For posterity, here it is again: You know those '80s style vehicle decals that are many different colours, how would you go about recreating those in a single layer? I bought some reproduction decals for my TX3 a few years ago and was astounded at the quality, however I got them from Australia and no one in NZ seems to have the knowledge of how to reproduce them in the same single layer format. Archetype asked this question, which I missed the first time around (due to the aforementioned spam) So the red and blue parts of the sticker aren't just layer of vinyl on top of the grey outline? Are they printed? Correct. The red, grey (not blue) and dark grey are all a single layer, instead of being three different stickers laid on top of each other. And yes, they are printed. Here's the rear decal, which is again one continuous layer of red and black. From memory, the guy in Australia who got these decals commissioned had to buy them in a bulk lot of twenty to make the whole exercise worthwhile. He didn't go into any detail about the method used, except that he took actual steel cuts (from a wrecked TX3) with the stickers already attached to the people who made them, so presumably they had 1:1 scale to play with. Anyway.the decals that I need to get remade are the ones running down the side of the car, for my BFMR: I don't have a close-up image, but the wording is light grey with a darker grey outline, made up of horizontal segments (similar to Zeb's RIVERSIDE logo, if anyone's familiar with it). any thoughts/advice would be appreciated. I would love to have some made to the same accuracy/quality as my TX3 ones.

mikuni
My understanding is that it is just a lazer printed decal onto normal vinyl. This is a little bit specialist, as in a few years back very few sign writers would have had the gear to do it, but it is slowly getting more common. Chances are the ones you asked won't have had this equipment yet. Keep asking different suppliers? The stickers we get made up for nats etc use this - they aren't multi vinyls - so people can definitelty do it.
Styles
Signarama do some local decals that we use, they're multi-coloured printed ones like that http://www.signarama.co.nz/. We do fair quantiites at a time, but I think they'd probably be open to small quantites.... perhaps hit them up.
Stu
Eco solvent or latex print onto clear self adhesive print media, often with laminate over the top then run through the cutter. Shouldn't be too hard to replicate. Current machines can also print metalics
Steelies
yup most of the stickers we get done are printed on vinyl, clear in some cases edit - yeah what he said, with the laminate on top for durability etc
Stu
Printer at work is currently setup with pigment based inks else I'd sort them for you. Talk to Drew at Nova Graphics out west, he should be able to help
xsspeed
Just throwing another name into the hat - ian at Sign Formula in East Tamaki, I am getting him to do my bmx stickers so could let you know how they go. Dave/10speed should be able to comment on them, as he did the stickers on his bmx according to the guy who painted my bike/builts and sold Dave's
0R10N
Okay thanks for the advice folks. I'll keep asking around. I get the feeling there are some signwriters out there who don't want to undertake the work because it's such a "small" unprofitable project (notwithstanding the fact that I could easily sell another four to five sets of these decals to the right people... blerg)
KKtrips
Try Speedy Signs They have digital printers and will do small run and one off stuff providing you are wiling to pay appropriately.
Archetype
/\/\/\ Yeah, I pretty much agree with what you said, Ed. Most, if not all sign writers should be able to help you out, but a lot of them aren't interested in the smaller jobs. I set up a sub-brand of my main business to cater for the small/one-off jobs that sign writers don't really like to do. I get all sorts of odd requests, and most people are happy to pay for the time/service if it's reasonable. I'd be happy to help you out, but it might be easier for you to deal with someone locally, as the most accurate way of reproducing them is to take detailed close up photos and lots of measurements. 0R10N
Cost is not a huge limiting factor to me... I'm happy to pay the appropriate rates and even travel outside of Auckland if I have to, and like I said, there are multiple people interested in purchasing the decals for their cars if everything goes to plan. Detailed close up photos and measurements aren't a problem either. I know a guy with a super immaculate BFMR willing to let me borrow his car for a day to get all the decal measurements/photos sorted. Stu
Just make sure they have a printer/plotter, nothing worse than a job done half pie with alignment problems
