mjrstar
Some cage progress from yesterdays work session.. Progress was relatively swift thanks to my mate who has just completed his EF civic cage this week so he has his tube notching eye in. Kit unpackaged.. spare material cut from the car.. Main hoop in. Back stays. Forward Laterals this is where we got to last night, so one more day should get close to sorting out the harness bar, main hoop diagonal, and door stays & gussets.
mjrstar
More cage work today. We Managed to sort the dash mounting and cutouts for the forward laterals then moved onto the diagonal in the main hoop with start of harness bar. Harness bar complete. Couple of forward lateral braces. No windscreen bar as it was too short (should have checked it earlier Iguess) So put the car to bed early.
mjrstar
Cage is now dominated, success with the bender from work for the side intrusion. made a start on coolant lines for the turbo...
flyingbrick
Those swagelok benders are the very best money can buy.. Nice work too
mjrstar
So on the quest for turbo coolage I made some bits, (and brought some bits) and then had a man at work stick them together.. Probably a bit flash for connections under the dash that you won't see... but should be nice as easy to connect/disconnect and blank / loop if needs be.

Truenotch
The cage looks great! ETA to track time?
mjrstar
In 4 weeks time It will still be fxxing ages away from being track ready, no rush.

mjrstar
Good progress yesterday with a visit from my mate , roof bracketing all sorted (so the cage is now ready for paint) , new turbo core installed, and some of the finer points of the turbo and heater coolant lines completed.. New air hungry comp wheel on the left.. A quick trip to my work was required to make it fit..
flyingbrick
So how do you know how much to take out for the wheel to fit? Did you just try keep it as tight as possible and freehand the curves?
mjrstar
I learnt about this yesterday...with 2x thicknesses of electrical tape you want it to juuust rub off a whiteboard marker witness line without munching the tape. The cover was already machined to a td06 20g profile by a mate who has done a bunch of these including the bigger turbo on my evo, so it just needed a touch of clearance for the extended tip on the exducer. The inducer fitted just fine even with the extra 6-7mm up front. For a start if it rubs with no tape chuck on a whiteboard mark turn comp wheel backwards and that is the bit to machine off first.
flyingbrick
That's great info, cheers
mjrstar
This may well be the last bit of welding on the body for a while.. Fitted and trimmed carpet after giving it a good wash, should save scratching the cage paintwork once painted.. Then pulled the rear loom out and other junk ready to rub back the boot area for a coat of black..(too cheap to do it in body colour/because race car )
mjrstar
Bit of sound deadening removal (not the preferred dry ice method, but the Bosch choppy tool did an ok job..) and some sanding... And result of the turbo coolant lines:
mjrstar
Decided a Driveshaft loop was needed before i cracked on with painting the floor.. probably weighs more than the carbon fibre driveshaft tube.. for reference spec is 50x5 mild steel, 4x m10 fasteners and minimum 30cm2 for each mounting plate. Has to be within 250mm of the centre of the front universal. The 250mm is an amendment as the old dimension was 150mm.. then floor paint time.. Then cage paint time.. only doing the primer with the old suction gun until the new devilbiss gravity guns turn up.
mjrstar
New devilbiss paint gun is awesome, a word of warning though rollcage painting should only be tackled by contortionist midget gymnast ninjas.. Shit photo yeah I know.. clear on tomorrow night hopefully.. Peace out.
mjrstar
Clear on- few runs in the tricky bits (most of which won't be in plain view, the runs can stay because I am not sanding / buffing a rollcage. Another cellphone pic because photography is not my thing.
kseries.rookie
Has the cage already been homologated? Unless you're a wizard of course have fingers in pies, you may find it hard to get it done with paint. If you knew this, disregard and i'll be on my merry way
