HUNT3D
I'm 17 and have a 75' Hillman hunter as my first car and have been looking around for a Engine with a bit more power and was looking around the lines of a 4age. A guy down the road had a Toyota Trueno Sprinter with the 4age 20-valve 'Silver Top' and he had a crash which pushed in the front, but it only damaged the radiator. He's offered me $400 for the whole thing. I was wondering if this would be a good move as i would want to put it in the Hunter?
DJZ
Much better idea than the 4K in your thread title.
Ranter
Sounds like a fwd engine? If so you will need a gearbox and to alter the manifolds and plumbing to suit. You will need to make mounts for both engine and gearbox and most likely change the diff to a stronger item. You will also need brake and suspension work. (driving one today they can hardly handle the original engine) There will be other unforseen dramas as well (read $$) After that you will have a smaller engine than original and I would miss the torque the old girl. If you know all that and are keen get into it, it will certainly be easier with a complete car to grab all the needed parts.
J-W-G
Do it youll need to convert it to rwd heres a website with rwd parts for conversion http://s-86.com its austalian so easy for postage
MK2-8-U
if its a fwd engine, short answer is no. like RAanter said the cost of converting it to rwd + making it run isnt worth it unless you just want a 4age hunter. sr20de would be better imo, pinto would an easier option
Truenotch
Eh? They are extremely easy to make work in RWD form - no sump mods needed, bit of cooling, couple of mounts, wiring and a RWD gearbox and you're away. Silvertop needs the inlet plenium modified to point the right way (because you can't run open quads due to AFM). Is the donor car Manual? Here's a guess for the budget - this might change your mind: - $400 - Engine / Donor car - $600 T50 gearbox with 4A bellhousing ($$$) - $300 clutch kit - $200ish - RWD extractors (Coby is 245 brand new) - $100-$200 - custom driveshaft - $300 - diff upgrade (might get away without this for starters) - $200 - misc mods (airbox, cooling, dizzy notch etc) - can be DIY - $200 - wiring. Easily get well into the $2-3k mark before looking at suspension.
shizzl
you can do it even cheaper again if your not super fussy you can use a k50 cable clutch type box that you can get for next to nothing, get the clutch plate with it. grab the driveshaft with it from a ke70 and mod that with the hunter shaft.. when i did my escort conversion i had all work done by niteparts, they did the loom and plenum, cost me $250 all up. but that was about 8 years ago now... i also picked up a fxgt for 400 that was crashed...then sold the body for 300... the brakes on a hunter are alright if they are the disc front model, just put new pads and shoes in it. new shocks and super low springs will help stiffen it up.. you will NEVER miss the 1725 thats in it...although i do miss my hunter,it was my first car.. $2-3k??? i cant see that much being spent unless you cant do anything yourself
Truenotch
^^ Agreed, that price is only if you can't do stuff yourself and go for a T-50 etc. If you find a K-50 and do all the work yourself it could easily be done for under $1000 + cert. shizzl
id only go for a t50 if it were gonna be semi thrashed...turbo might aswell get a better box than that again.. but the k50 seem to handle a n/a 4age all right...the hunter diff will handle it ok for a while aswell... ive never had a measure up of one before but a hilux diff may sneak in there if your lucky..or even a b1600 diff.. or try a liteace.... Shandangles
^^^ hahaa less than 3k what a crock of shit, nothing is ever as easy as it appears to be with engine swaps, EVER. and look at "a" series K50 prices on TM not cheap anymore. i think of you could do a drive in drive out swap for sub 3k inc cert you would def deserve a crate of DB. feathersword
That's the other point, you'd need to cert it which is $500, plus you'd want to do suspension at the same time, I reckon you'd be looking at over 3K easy. Depending on what kinda nick the Hunter was in you might need to fix up some rust, then paint on top of that. Might be worth buying the Toyota and putting the motor aside, could probably make most of the money back selling parts - seats etc, and then the shell to the scrappies.
