Twin-carbs?

I wanted to run my Mini on twin carbs when I get the 1100 engine in, so that I could get more power (combined with diff. cam, head work etc).

But I talked to the Mini specialist garage, and the guy said that due to today's crap fuel (different octane rating everytime you fill up, and fuel sits around for ages before actually being pumped into your car), the twin carbs would cause problems, and pretty much need to be tuned everytime you fill up with fuel.

Is this really true?

Does anyone else have running issues with twin carbs?

All help appreciated.

Chur!

nah they'll be sweet if set up right.

my sister's mini runs a set of twin 1.5 s.u's on it and it never requires fettling. 1.25 which I imagine you'll be running are no different.

My brother's one had a metro single 1.5" with all the emmisions lark on it. He recently swapped it to a twin throat downdraught weber that i used to run on an 1100 in mine back in the day. It need sfine tunning on the secondary jets as it runs a little rich but it shouldn't need tany tweaking after that.

love how the joker you talked to probably just wants to take your money!

agree.

imo, (have had both SU and strombergs) su's are easier to tune/keep running nicely. there isn't really anything that can break, where as strombergs ave rubber diaphragms that wear out and split (causing shit running etc).

and su's look 1000000 time better

1 3/4 inch SU off a Metro or similar makes basically the same power, and a lot easier to tune and cheaper to buy/run. Fact.

Also, less likely to be worn in the spindles and rounded off screw's, bent linkages etc like most S/H SU kit's.

Twin carb's do look sweet tho

Yeah, that would be my next choice...

SUs are elegant devices, built pretty well.

The only problem I have had so far is running high ethanol content fuel causes separation in the floats and probably ain't that good if you're still rocking old school rubber lines. In saying that, non-ethanol fuel is easy enough to find (just avoid gull and certain 91 mixes)

I probably have a spare cast manifold to suit a 1 3/4 Carb and possibly a HIF44 as well...

I would automatically assume that the carb would need a rebuild/new seals as it has not been used for 4-5 years.

The likely-hood is I don't have a fat enough needle to run a mild 1100..

NINJA EDIT: I just had a thought that the manifold probably has epic porting to match my heavily modified 1275 head so might not perform so well on the small bore motor...

also the best mod you can do to any mini is to fit a honda civic / nissan pulsar dizzy..

get rid of those nasty points..

there is another site (i found about 10 years ago) which has some more info bu i can't seem to dig it up again..
