Toyota box to Essex engine

Recommended Posts

I'm running a Essex V6 currently with a C4 slush box and wanting to make manualize. Sierra 5speed doesn't bolt straight on and not ideal for the torque i've been told.

All suggestions lead to a W?? Toyota 5 speed.

Question is how hard and what to look for?

Sorry for the ignorance, like the old school rides just not a oldschool mechanic! (not a mechanic at all for that matter :blackeye: )

I've never seen this conversion before, but Toyota 5 speeds have been bolted to almost anything in the past.

The W50 gearbox is the old steel case box that hotrodders like. They are strong but heavy and don't share internals with the later W boxes. W40 is the same but 4 speed.

W55/56/57/58 are the best ones to choose from. They're all the same box apart from differences in ratios. They're all alloy case boxes and you can get 4-5 different shifter positions to suit whichever car you are using. W57 and 58 are the most sought after - prepare to pat $600+ for a good one.

w50's bit of a torque hater compared to the others, will blow syncro's in that situation if abusing it in the wrong gear,

remembering 350chev makes heaps of torque early in the rev range compared to essex making probably similar to diddys

turbo soarer if not less

Thanks all

Will go with a W50,

waiting on a reply from Steel Surgeons

Dellow conversions look pretty professional and got back with a price.

Heading over to Oz next month may end with that if not hear back from SS.

Slowly making progress on project.
