  1. The 5000lb winches I've used are not fast. They are variable speed though, so as the load comes on it gets slower but keeps pulling. I also have a snatch-block pulley to double up the cable/power. My brother has the 9500lb version on a Vitara, It will lift the thing off the ground no probs. And he's had no problem with that winch at all. Drives through rivers, bogs, submerged half the time. The bigger winch seems to be a better unit reliability wise.
  2. I've had no luck at all with those chinese winches. Been through two of them on the van. Rain water seems to get into the motor and stuffs the brushes/armature. I've never driven it through a river so the winch has never been submerged but still two brand new winches were toast because of water/rust inside the motor. The last new one I fitted, I sealed around the motor with silicone before fitting. Never used it for over a year, then when I needed it, it wouldn't go. Armature was welded to the case with rust! Buggered if I know how the rain gets into them.. So if anyone need parts for these winches (except the motor) I have two sets of everything else..
  3. Yeah combination of torque, heavy car and far too much jandal used to strip teeth off the 2nd and 3rd cluster gear Shouldn't be a problem behind a V6 in a light body.
  4. Whats the strength of the W55/6/7/8 series like compared to the w50 (ironcase) ? Probably strong enough for pretty much any V6 I'm guessing, but I remember shredding a few of the W50's behind a 350 chev.
  5. This is my used and abused L300. Only mods are Hilux wheels with 31x10's which required some ahem.. "adjustments" with a big hammer to stop them rubbing at full lock. And a cheapo-chinese winch. The motor is a very old and stuffed 2L SOHC (330ks) I would say it uses more oil than petrol, but that might be impossible considering the gas consumption. (yes it desperately needs repowering but I'm too poor at the mo) Other "un-mods" are a hose-out interior (no carpet or mats) and a LF hub that randomly tries to engage 4wd at hwy speeds!
  6. The oil should be half way up the sight glass with the quad on level ground. As for the pop back through the carb, this can caused by a lean condition or a valve not seating etc. Check, valve clearances. Check for vacuum leaks around the engine side of the carb mount. Strip and clean the carb if you haven't already. Of course you've already done the obvious like throw in a new spark plug and checked the plug-cap....
  7. I've seen this happen on older cars when the throttle butterfly spindle is worn (or the carb body or both) - you get a vacuum leak between the spindle and carb body.
  8. Could you use compressed air? Along the same lines as hot-air balloons? Add air to slow or ascend - bleed air off to descend?
  9. Nice! - that would be the go. Gotta love google's image search
  10. I was just looking at that option. Do the 2.8 Delica/L400 4wd vans still have the Hi/Low box? And what are the 2.8 motors like (power/reliability etc) Might be easier/cheaper to get one of those and just put my big wheels, winch, bars, roofrack and other shit all over it These ones:
  11. Thanks for all the input guys. The van is used for bush/beach fishing trips/camping etc - its not pretty by any means, and as such is not worth much anyway (are any of them?) So ultimately I'm just after a cheap boost in power. It does a fair bit of 4wd-ing but I'm not overly cruel to it. Good thoughts there on both the Mitsi and Holden V6's - chances are I would have to pay someone to put it in as well. I have the experience and know-how ( 22 years as a mechanic back in the day ) but these days I dont have the tools/workshop/access/etc to do it. ( floundering around in an open driveway just doesnt do it for me lol ) All good info though, I'll see what engine/trans combo's I can find locally. cheers
  12. didnt mean to start a flame war I agree torque is what it needs. I'm not into 'performance' as such, just want to be able to avoid being passed by fully laden trucks on the hills ( its a tad embarrassing ) I have my doubts the original 5spd box would handle the torque tho. Might have to use the holden auto as well. (tha aussie outfit makes a transfer case adapter for that)
  13. Valve clearances too tight? I've seen this before - valves expand when they get hot closing up what little clearance they had making for very rough idle and stalling.. Just a thought.
  14. Ok roger that. Was wondering if the early 3.0L pajero v6 donk and perhaps gbox/transfer case would go in? Will keep an eye out for 2.4 L300 engines
  15. Ok thanks fuel - the fuel consumption of 17mpg would be fine if it had the power to match, it also has hilux wheels which has upped the gearing and made 5th gear pretty much null and void So fwd gallant/etc engines are out. There was a starion motor on tardme a week ago, no ecu or loom but.. http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.asp?id=292388628 I see the aussies are fond of putting v6 holdens in them.. hmmmm '>http://www.v6conversions.com.au/MITSUBISHI%20L300%204X4.htm
  16. Hi all, looking for a bit of advice. I have a 90 L300 4wd with the standard sohc 2L carby engine. ( ok you can stop laughing now ) Its extremely gutless and thirsty so I want to repower with something more....useful? Searching the interweb brought me here, where I see the 4g63 DOHC is a popular choice. I see they come in wide-block and skinny?-block forms. My question is, which one should I look for to bolt into the L300 with the least amount of pain? cheers chris
