escorted
For some strange reason the exhaust gasket on my pintho "blows out". By this i mean the gasket gets pushed out thus causing a gas leak from the headers. Granted the headers are a coby item . Everything is done up to almost stripping point. The gasket will last the best part of say 500kms. Ideas? past experinces? All help would be much appreciated! Matt. P.s Also need to borrow some 4/108 wheels and tires for 1-2 hours any will do. Beer or money will be provided for donor. In auckland

escorted
This is what i thought. Maybe sticking it up in the mill and running a DTI over the head/ headers
V8Pete
I've got some 14" 4x108 steels, but not sure if the centre bore is big enough.
escorted
I've got some 14" 4x108 steels, but not sure if the centre bore is big enough. I just need something basic. I have some mean vibrations in the steering ATM wondering weather its the wheels.
shizzl
f you dont have a flexi in your exhaust and you have a vibration it can make it leak,or crack the exhaust..
Spencer
This is what i thought. Maybe sticking it up in the mill and running a DTI over the head/ headers ultimately both surfaces faced up would be ideal but I'd try high temp silicone with a new gasket for now
escorted
Interestingly enough the vibration in the steering was happening before i put the 2l in. Its suddenly got alot worse. Ive redone all of the bushes upfront also. But good thinking on that one

Hemi
my escort constantly blew the gasket and i found it was cos there was too much weight on the header .. i only had one mount for the zorst and the headers .. just a thought

slipsittin
STD gaskets suck!! They don't allow for heat causing movement enough or slight distortion. Anything that has headers needs a flexi joint fitted to the bottom of them to keep the engine vibrations in the engine and the exhaust doing its job. Also all headers need a bracket to the bell housing bolts or back of engine to stop the whipping effect caused by acceleration and deceleration. I have never run a STD gasket on the exhaust of any car I have modified unless the header is a genuine part. Call a place in Hamilton called Better Industries Ltd 07 847 8752 or sales@betterindustrial.co.nz they make aspestous gaskets to the thickness you require and they will suggest the right grade for your application. These gaskets do not fail unless they come loose! I sympothsize with any of you younger guys who have forked out the money for new headers and get a crapy gasket, but stop buying the crapy gaskets and call the guys above and have more driving fun. Gaz
Maybe BUT. Ive never had a STD or FORD manifold gasket fail on any of my 2l's in the 5 years Ive played with em. Ive used both on fresh builds and again on older engines, not to mention the multiple times Ive changed them when pulling engine out/back in.. Ive even used the old one again with goo.. never had one leak. Id say your prob isnt the gasket but maybe the surface.
eke_zetec_RWD
chuck gaskets away and use 3bond. also put straight edge on headers and check for flattness
escorted
Found a more comprehensive gasket yesterday. Trying that. The ones from repco are just single pieces that slot in on each port. Been through 3 of these . Thanks for all the help!

Having never seen your rides in person Gaz I can't comment on them (trusting that your a good bugger and I do beleive that), but you must have a different setup to the rest of us who have run pintos and had trouble. Do you run a flexi joint at the bottom of the headers Gaz? When I had my last turbo engine on the dyno I did in 4 gaskets before 500kms running.
