NewGuy
A ball-joint splitting fork struck with a hammer is a better tool IMHO What i use, works a treat.

V8Pete
Ball joint splitters are OK but the type pictured above are limited as to where you can fit them and how much pressure they can apply.A ball-joint splitting fork struck with a hammer is a better tool IMHO However - the trusted method of striking the steering knckle with TWO big hammers simultaneously is the best way and works 90% of the time. Take a few gentle practice swings first and take heed of the advice about leaving the nut on to protect the thread on a B/J you wish to re-use. Please elaborate on two hammer method and/or how those fork ones are used. I have come across one that I can't get at with that pictured type of splitter or any other improvised methods. thegreatestben
fork either side of balljoints rubber boot. Rapes the shit out of said boot/removes the ball joint. Good for replacing the joint, not so good when you are just removing it.
V8Pete
Gay - it's a cunty one to replace (would need to be drilled out etc) so I'd rather not have to.

thegreatestben
See now if you had an AW11, the ball joint is opposite to that.

V8Pete
See now if you had an AW11, the ball joint is opposite to that. Pwned (am I allowed to say that here? ) Should've got a Peugeot. Wouldn't have needed to undo the hub nuts for a start.
thegreatestben
Another method is smack the lower arm with a decent hammer/sledgey. Applying heat is to the part the ball joint sits in is helpful too. Again careful not to burninate the rubber boot.
kyteler
Step 1: Get a fucking hammer Step 2: FUCKEN BANG! Step 3: FUCKEN BANG other side. Step 4: If step 2 and three don't work after several attempts, try then both together. Step 5: Fucken sorted.
V8Pete
Mean. I previously wasn't sure which bit to hit or in which direction. Will give that a crack tomorrow. Is your rat hammer pretty much hitting that cast bit horizontally?
kyteler
Yeah man, if possible. All you're doing is shocking the steel so the taper lock breaks. It might take a single light-ish tap, it might take a fair bash. Depends, some are easy, some are hard. You'll find out.
V8Pete
Single-hammer method didn't work, but two-hammer method worked mint on that one...but wasn't enough room for two hammers on the tie rod end one and then this happened
Yowzer
Same happened to mine. Supercheap jobbie? A good quality one should be all good, but those cheap ones don't work too well I got one of them fork ones now and it works rather alright. Didn't even maim the boot either which was nice. Never attempted the hammer method as I never had a suitable hammer, let alone 2 of them
eke_zetec_RWD
No space also works in this case, jack under arm and lift strut, wedge steel into space between hub and arm on inside of joint. let jack down. done.
