d.p.n.s
yeh man the most comonly one done is mk2 escort. you will need --complete mk2 struts, discs, calpiers and hoses (the only thing to watch is the top hats some mk1 had were a differant size to the mk2 i just drillerd mine out) -- you will also need a mk2 steering rack -- and maybe you will need to change the brake pipes in the engine bay as some were imperial and some metric dan
sholdowa
...or if you just want to stop real fast, and are not worried about heat buildup, just add an inline servo
Guest smcka
Get some mark 1 Capri struts, they bolt straight in with NO modifications needed at all. You also get a 1" lower ride height, bigger brakes, hub bearings and stub axles. Make sure the Capri struts have the steering arms on them as you need them and Escort do not fit. Brake lines will fit without drama, same wheel studs (mark 2 Escort are metric), etc etc.
peteretep
capri struts are pretty hard to find and are usually expensive

peteretep
rofl, nah, they are standard mk2 struts, but all recond, they are for sale I'll aim to get capri struts as replacements i think
Gaz
Pretty sure chucking capri struts in changes offset and angles.
peteretep
i'll do some research, but all the guys in the uk use capri struts, gaz shocks only turn capri struts into coilovers
Gaz
i'll do some research, but all the guys in the uk use capri struts, gaz shocks only turn capri struts into coilovers I run Gaz coiover setup from burton on my escort struts. Brought them from Burton bout 4-5 years back. Most people use capri struts because they have a stronger stub axle which unless your rallying or doing sweet jumps I guess does'nt matter so much. I guess I could go and compare them in a few days. I have a set of each under my house. Also capri has removable tierod mounting points which I believe people find as an advantage also. Perhaps because you can modify it/make a new one at differant height to change steering geometry.
shizzl
do the capri struts bolt straight onto mk2s and mk1s? all model capris?
Gaz
Dunno but I use some in my mk2 cortina with escort shocks and a aluminum sleave in the strut tube to centre the shock. Its easy to do and then, if they dont already, they would bolt into mk2s also. If they bolt into late model mk1's then I dont see why they would'nt go into mk2's tho. Im guessing they do.. but.. as said above, may change other things like offset and camber. edit: I dont know however if they are metric or imperial. Above someone said they were metric in which case your away laughing.
Guest smcka
Twin Cam Escorts used Capri struts.
Gaz
So rumors of offsets, tierod mounting position and/or camber angles being differant?
peteretep
i'll ask on turbosport
Guest smcka
Mark 1 Capri struts fit directly into Escort 1. Nothing to change. In a Mark 2 Escort you will need to change the tie rod ends to accept the imperial taper on the Capri steering arms. 'Green' tie rod ends adapt metric rack ends to imperial taper on the struts, so problem solved. You'll also have a metric brake pipe and imperial fittings on the caliper. Big $$ to custom make a set of hoses. Lots of stories around, but Capri struts are worth the money. Instant 1" lower ride height, 45lb heavier spring (145lb vs. 100lb), bigger, thicker brakes, bigger hubs & bearings and bigger diameter inserts over standard Escort. Thats why they are expensive, instant upgrade.
peteretep
you know where I can get some? any condition as long as they arent bent
Gaz
I got one set off trademe for $300 without shocks or calipers. Then 1 week later I got one set with shocks and calipers from pickapart for $40. Go figure. If you hold off a few days I will compare and take pics of the two differant strust side by side and any differances I find. Guest smcka
Where the damper tube goes through the stub axle, the Capri ones are 1" further down (towards the ground). Thats your 1" ride height. Plus bigger tube, brakes, etc.
Raizer
Iv got a pair of mk1 Capri 1600GT struts, shocks and discs will be fucked and the calipers could use a rekit (not that you cant use Escort ones anyway) I may be keen to sell them, if anyones keen for them PM me
