Cutting nose of capri

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone knows, if I cut into the nose of the capri, just a hole big enough where the top of the intercooler will poke through, is it likely that the cert guy is going to tell me off/not let me away with it?

Heres a pic of the bit I mean:

I think you'd be best to talk to a panel beater about the strength of the panel you would like to chop a hole out of. I imagine the valance wouldn't be a structural member, so you'd be alright to remove it but they will have a better idea.

I removed a radiator support panel in one of my chevettes years ago and a panel beater stregthened up the remaining support peices, which noticibly increased the structural rigidity in the front of the car.

Are you going to be certifying the intercooler mounting and everything? Might be an idea if you are modifying the front end a little.

Its just for the top of the intercooler to go through, so the end tanks with the outlets sit just above the valence out of sight as with the piping and you can just see the bottom of the cooler.

Guess il find out soon enough after I cut it.

Looks awesome, but I wont be doing that, Im not going to run quarter bumpers, I want to keep it in one peice, hence why the cooler will hang out just below the bumper for the main airflow to it.

Above is basically how RT had the intercooler set up on his capri:

if you have trouble getting that certed then im in a whole world of shit... seriously though, I doubt it'd be much of a problem, I'd say the cert guy would just make sure the radiator crossmember isnt full of rust (like they are in most capris). it'd be best to ask him straight out though.

water to air cooler.... anti rice rocket. each to their own :D

Maybe you could do some kind of lightening hole type arrangment.

Lightening holes are basically holes where the inside edge is bent inwards. This would help to maintain the stiffness in the panel if you reckon this might be a problem. It's a method used on Aircraft a lot and that blue escort up there has it too.

I think it's usually done in a press though so you might have to be inventive with a dolly or something.

Well I took to it with an angle grinder, still needs some adjustment/finsihing but i wasnt sure what to expect when I started, but heres how far I got untill the disc wore out...

The hole:

The intercooler roughly where it will mount:

Front veiw, obviously the skirt needs cutting to allow airflow to the intercooler, unsure how im exactly going to do this as yet:

Any idea where I should mount the plate, dont really want to mount it off to the side if I can but cant imagine anywhere else without it looking just as out of place..

Yea but you see the front skirt will be cut out so the intercooler gets the air flowing straight to it, hence the plate wont be able to get mounted there, nothing to screw it to, unless it was to the intercooler :P

Think il mount it to the bumper directly in front of it so it still in middle, wont block that much airflow..

And yea, il raise it up a bit yet, and the front skirt will drop a bit to, will post up when I get it all sorted.
