wat sorta head u usin brah? red style or later blue/black style

I have a Yella Terra 12-port, I'm sure most know them but for anyone who doesn't know the brand they were known as Perfectune and did all the development work on the Bathurst Holdens in the 70s and then ran an exchange head service after that and became known as Yella Terra because they painted them yellow.

They took a stock head and machine it out removing bottle neck areas and customising the chamber shape and aligning the size to be identicle.

Turbo/Supercharger heads have 68cc chambers and N/A heads have 56cc

All Yella Terra 12 port iron heads are fitted with valve seat inserts making them perfectly suited to unleaded or LP Gas fuels. The heads feature huge 1.740" intake and 1.550 exhaust valves and performance double valve springs. (Not all the early heads could run unleaded)

These are a base head for customising and in the future I will get mine worked a bit mre... The great thing about these is that for the money you pay for them a head speacialist shop couldn't do it for the price and they are proven performance.

They also used to make heads for all the more common Aussie motors including Fords, Valiants and the Holdens

BTW I got my head as part of the motor package which I paid $600 for Black engine, Yella Terra, Polished injection, computer, 5-speed Toyota and exhaust and have been using it for almost 4 years of drag racing.

So the upshot of this is as follows....

Deck height will be zero....

With my oversize Flat Top Pistons this would give me a standard Compression of 10.1:1

So I need a chamber size of approx. 49.21cc to achieve 11.5:1

Hey, cool Torana, theres definitely not enough of these around anymore. Did your one used to be purple by any chance?

Yea it was purple but very patchy so I did a quick paint to tidy until i get round to doing a good job on it.... maybe in a year or so

Sounds like you knew the old girl, was it before I bought from Gore?

yella terra do a sweet alloy beast too . their gear really makes the old holdanga sixes go hard. was going down the same route as you b4 i fitted entire unit out of a vn.

I looked at many many different options before deciding to stay with the ol Holden 6.... Because of the limited space (theres more space in a HB Viva), I decided against a Lexus and the cost of a Chev was too much, the RB30 was too much changing and then I would need to work it so cost would have mounted... I looked at various model V6s but all needed modding to get power.

The way I saw it if I was to change the engine from the Holden 6 then I wanted at least 350HP which would mean heavier drivetrain plus other goodies.... 7-10 grand conservatively needed from scratch.

The car would have needed a few cuts and changes... I have always loved the look of the triple webers filling the entire side of the engine bay and as I already had a good head this helped me spend more on the bottom end and use good parts.

Back in the days of the Repco round Australia when Holden entered the new Commodore they chose basically an XU-1 configured 202 engine because they were the most reliable engine Holden had in the Commodore for longevity, they only changed filters and fluids during the race and as history shows Brock was only a publicity stunt turned into an absolute clean up as the Commodore 6 cylinder smashed the opposition.

So with the absolute success of all the reliable racing and rallying XU-1s and the Repco I decided to build myself a decent Holden 6 and hope I can have some of that reliability as well.

I talk too much... but I love my old Holdens... In fact I just plain love all chrome bumper cars basically from any country from Fiats to Hillmans and Holdens to Datsuns.

Nah, I'm one of Sams mates, I'm building a Lexus v8 powered Capri, can remember talkin to you about it at his 21'st last year, still haven't got hold of that Viva yet eh?

im glad u think positive like that bro. but just remember that those ultra reliable xu1s were bareley 200hp. having experiance with highly modded holden sixes and such like your 300hp beast will be good fun WHEN its going. triples never stay in tune long and a cam with enough guts to push a 3.3 to 300hp + will be a dog to drive anywhere but a race track. thus was the reason i went to the vn v6 14.2 @ 97mph on a stock motor and trans and 3.08 diff gears starts every time and got 30mpg on trips. throw in a good cam/headers and a remap and 12s coulda been the go. im not dissin ya bro just being practical thats why most torries had v8s put in em

No problems mate, i never thought you were dissing, sorryz if it sounded that way, just the problem I saw with V6s and V8s was the Cost verses the gain verses the drawback verses the theme etc. The LC/LJs are chronic on the front tyres unless you alter the suspension, $$, they dont have a Power steer option for a heavy V8 unless you mod something, and with the high chassis rails they make it arkward for most V type motors, I guess the real deciding factor came to having an oldschool motor making serious ponies in a car that originally had an 80hp 138ci red motor with 3 on the tree and loving an engine bay full of carbs and not plumbing. I have always had the car look like a 1970s including the Cheviot mags so the straight six was the front runner unless I could find something with alot more HP... I also have one of the best if not the best Holden 6/Weber tuners in Australasia who wants to help me whenever he can, his car ran 12s when he took it out.

All in all there were a huge amount of factors and took a long time before I decided and now I have something else that has come along as well...

I bought a 1972 HQ ute for $500 today as I couldn't resist it as it was in very good nick with nothing needing to be done except wof and rego is on hold.

The Toranas and Coons fanging it on channel one today was mean. Got to get rid of the stupid p00j and get me a pre-1980 Holden. Are you planning on taking this on a track with corners at some point?

Spot on there.. My long term goal is the mini Targa or at least a few classic events although this may never happen but the short term is to get it as fast as I possibly can and keep adding stuff to it until i need a roll cage. Next year if I'm happy with the set up I may join the local car club so I can do some of the events.

Hope you get something, prices are starting to creep up on the older Holdens so no time like now to buy a bargain and enjoy it.

I missed the racing today darn it as I got side tracked buying a ute on the way back from a night in Hanmer Springs.

I nearly bought a gold 4-door LJ in about 2004 for $6000. Saw it on TradeMe again recently-ish with an RB20[something]T. Couldn't live with myself not garaging it etc in this neck of the woods.

I could run off a DVD of the racing too.

I would appreciate a dvd of the racing mate, Yea I know what ya mean about garaging, mines kept in the garage most of the time and if it is outside it has 1-2 cars parked behind it. I spoke with a couple of guys who put the RB25 head on an RB30 and worked it a bit more, real nice motors and maybe one day I may go that way myself.

yep i do have to agree with u on the point of on gain Vs cost of transplant i was lucky with the v6 transplant i did was dealt off with a very talented engineer for some work on his house so it only cost $400 in total and cert in those days was $300. they do look and sound real fat with a big cam and triple carbs. had a look at a r33 skyline the other day with rb25 with hot cams and triple webber type throttle bodies sounded and looked cool and went good too by all accounts

AAAARGGGH.... I'm so stupid....

I spent hours and hours working the crank and today I got a call saying the the thrust ring is worn too far...... Why didn't I check it before doing the work!

The engine reco guy was dipping my engine and and getting it ready for reboring, balancing and decking and

Back to a fresh crank with buggar all wear and another 20-30 hours work to prepare this one....

  • 2 weeks later...

Well a bit of an update:

I worked for hours and hours on the new crank and took it in to be balanced and my engine reco go was happy with the way it looked so if hes happy then I'm happy.

I spoke with my engine builder and I need to get a few more items, straight cut Cam set and High Volume oil pump so have these on order.

Also need to get washers for my head as the extra compression requires better than standard.

A few other things I need to do as well but have about 70% done.

Check clearance on the tappet cover once roller rockers are on, buy new hardened push rods to the correct length. I also need to get the flywheel and pressure plate balanced although I would like to buy a new 5kg flywheel before I do this but at this stage budget is being stretched.

My engine builder I would rate as one of the best race engine builders I have met and that includes some good people. Helpful as hell and quality info plus has the "number 8 wire" type gumption of working things out where others have never even thought to question it.

(Example of one his creations was a mid mounted 265ci E49 spec hemi engine in an HB Viva that embarrassed many big budget cars)

I will update photos of motor when I get everthing together and painted up and will include some of the transplant as well over the next few weeks.

  • 1 month later...

Finally got the old motor and box out of the car.

I stripped the sump, oil pickup and clutch (1/3 worn) from so I can use them for the new engine.

Shpped around for a high volume oil pump for the old girl as I was advised it should have one when revving past 6000rpm and definitely need one for 6500rpm+ and was quoted some rediculous prices until I asked the right person and paid just $166 for a brand new JP one.

I have removed the old heater box remnants and will block the holes with some panels, I removed the original Battery holder as the carbs would hit otherwise.

I need to ask about a battery in boot with WOF guy.

I still need to get hold of a regulator for the carb pressure which I believe is about 5psi

Getting closer to dropping in the new motor now.
