Gaz
Hilux is way heavier. Like twice the weight or more which is a bit. Id say bout 60kgs more which is a fuck load. You wouldnt ever blow the Quife LSD itd be the axles thatd let go. I think I will do it so wait and see how it works. Hilux will be slightly cheaper and you could possiably get disk brakes as well but its so much extra weight that is uneeded. Maybe b2000 is better. Or investigate Escudo's. They are very close to the right width standard,.
Gaz
Its just easy to fit the Quife LSD. No measuing, shortining, moving mounts, making handbrake braket etc etc.
Bistro
hmmm interesting. yea 60kg more? no way man....are you sure? but when you think about it its only one person.
Gaz
Well I weighed my hilux diff with no head in it and it was 70kgs. Supose taking the drums off and using discs would make it a bit lighter. I wouldnt expect the whole escort diff to be over 70kgs and id expect the hilux head to be another 60kgs. May be wrong tho. Its only estimated. 1 person is alot. If you dont care bout it being light then do it. You wont break it easy. I just know alot of people who would kill to knock 20-60kgs of their cars weight. Nominal
Hilux head (non-LSD) weighs just under 25kg. I've just sold one on Trademe and need to consider shipping methods so I slung it on the scales. Should get the P.O ladies grunting [edit weight - duh]
Gaz
^ cheers for that. LSD head should be similar.
Burntrubber
80kgs is what a complete 2WD lsd weighs with disk conversion aswell I doubt drums weigh anymore.
Gaz
I have the six stud version. Just the diff housing, axles and drums weigh in at 65ish kgs. Absolutly positive of this. Next time im home I will weigh my 2wd one with LSD head in it and also weigh a standard escort one. Gotta shorten the hulux too so should make a bit lighter. Burntrubber
Yeah a six stud 4WD one would weigh more for sure if you get the right 2WD one it might not need shortening 1425mm flange to flange from memory.
Honda Ass Dragger
mate has jsut complete a hilux conversion into his dx, and was only 20kg heavier than t series diff, that was a hilux converted to disc break thou, but chuck away those drums they weigh a ton on there own hilux ftw if ur goin for maxium power have u seen the size of those axels
Gaz
1425 is way to wide for an escort. Need 12 sumthng from memory. The very very early hilux diffs were close but are impossiable to find. My mate also has a hilux in his corolla dx sedan. He didnt even need to shorten it. They almost fit straight in.
eke_zetec_RWD
just a comment... if the hub plates on the axle are cast or forged and not machined steel then no welding allowed if you want a cert....
Gaz
bog/nutec them up... nah weld then paint perhaps. How would they know? They dont take it apart do they?
crazy_rich
bog/nutec them up...nah weld then paint perhaps. How would they know? They dont take it apart do they? how would they know? certifier; "ah... so you're telling me that hilux came factory with 4x108stud?" If the axles are heat treated properly after welding and the grain structure normalised again I would think they are fine for cert. Very good point though. Gaz
I meant how would they know the old holes have been welded up?
Burntrubber
You can weld them up and they do check alsorts when you go for a cert. They will definatly take the wheels off to have a look at caliper mount ect if the diff has been converted to disks.
Guest 13BPPTURBO
the 4wd hilux diffs are shorter than the 2wd and hiace diffs. im puting a 4wd diff with 2wd axles in my 73 datsun ute
Gaz
Whats the length?
crazy_rich
So yeah, last night I ran a tape measure over my hilux diff, noticed the leaf mounts were the same dist. apart as the capri (give or take) so yeh, bolted my capri leafs on, bolted the diff in. She lined up sweet as. bolted my wheels on, they stick outside the guards barely 10mm each side. Now i've gotta decide, should i pump my guards slightly, or should i narrow the diff (by sweet fuck all) I seriously think i could get away with facing 5mm off the inside of the wheel, facing 5mm off the inside parting faces of the bearing cup (end of housing) and then shortening the spline at the end of the axle (5mm) The diff measured about 1380mm so it must be out of a very old 2wd ute. Gaz
Yeah bro the OLD rwd hilux ones are real hard to find. Its outta a real early 70's (I think) hilux. They suposed to be 1370mm but yeah. 1380 whatever. I was looking for one of those years back but never found one. I was just going to take the meat off the back of the wheel as my wheels have a huge rear spacing. Get flairs. Mint
