4AGE into escort??

a mate of mine can sell me a 4age 16v and gbox 4 real cheap and was considering a conversion in2 the escort. im after any ideas on complications etc that i might come accross... i know il have 2 get hold hold of a t50 box or similar aswell as a ae86 rear end which will b tricky 2 get hold of. i think converting it 2 carbs mite b easier but the guy i know who can do is it pretty good with computers and ecus etc.

bassically if u no any1 thats done it or got any comments on it, help me out.

Efi would require new fuel lines and tank.

You'd have to change the sump from front bowl to rear bowl to clear the cross member.

Obviously engine mounts/crossmember will need to be modified to fit, same deal with the gearbox ones.

Exhaust is on the same side so wont require to much modification.

Custom throttle cable.

Custom speedo cable?

Break booster will most likely need to go?

Modified driveshaft no doubt.

Then you'd most likely require upgraded brakes for a cert.

Havent done it myself but those are a few things that come to mind.

You won't need 86 rear. Just modify the driveshaft to go onto your standard diff to begin with. Sure you will need to upgrade to something to handle the power eventually but it can be wait. An when you do it can be whatever is easiest for you, as 86 stuff is near impossible to find and won't go in easily anyway.

You need rear wheel drive exhaust manifold as the fwd one dumps straight onto where the mount bolts up for rwd, and you'll also need rwd intake (off an ae86 or modify one to suit - could get pricey) as the fwd one will have the intake facing straight towards your firewall!

I think Escorta mentioned everything else. A twin sidedraft setup would be pretty cool. You can score all sorts of carbs on 4age manifolds if you hunt around.

Should sell me it for my AE85 Conversion.

For a T50, RWD TVIS Manifold, Drive shaft and Engine mounts... youd be looking at about 1500 right there. Maybe thats a bit steep. but the T50 with A Series bellhousing goes for about 600 these days, a genuine AE86 TVIS Manifold goes for about 250. the driveshaft can be an AE85 item, still abut 50 bucks. and an AE85/86 Crossmember with mounts can be around 250 too..

If the Block isnt a genuine AE86 RWD block you will also need a RWD water pump (Off a 3AU or anyother RWD A Series engine) and the odd Pulley made up.

there's sump differences, and also flywheels differences as well.....

fwd sumps aren't baffled where as the rwd ones are, which stops oil surging issues etc. pretty easy to baffle a fwd sump but yuh

if you're gonna go to the effort of 4ageing an escy you might as well go 4agze bottom end with 20v head and turbo, doesn't cost fuck all more.

you can put 4agze internals in the 20v block but not the whole 4agze block and a 20v head on it coz it dont match up. he can get the engine and box 4 round 400 he said. and he thinks its a gen 2 16v from a ae92 or fxgt. so box wont be needed. dont no how the fuc id find a t50 box and im gesing theyd cost a tad. also comes with loom aswell and know some1 that works that shit so mite have a chat 2 him bout organising a conversion project 4 him long term wise, like wot atro had done.

You dont just need a T50. You can also use K50's out of AE85's (Cheaper but not quite as strong obviously) or you can get a Niteparts W5* to A Series bellhousing and get a W55 or W58 or something.

4agze pistons are all thats different bottom end wise. and thy're only like $400 a set brand new, rods etc are the same. this is what i'd do for sure. such a cheap engine that'll make big power numbers for what it is.

if you're gonna go to the effort, which it's a fairly sizeable task to chuck in an escort, then why not spend a little extra and get something mental.

Yeah I wouldnt want a tank of gas up front.

How can I tell if a gbox is a t50 or what. Its in the car so would have to look under it to tell. Any numbers etc on it that give it away. Its a 5 speed and nice and tight.

t50s spilt long ways and the bellhousing comes off and thanks to intial d there worth there weight in gold

k50s have the bellhousing as part of the front gearbox section- doesnt come off

only a k50 from a ae85 or a 3a dx will fit

buy the time youve blown and reaplaced a few k50s you might as well of got a t50 to start off with

im doin the 4age kp60 thing now

to be honest i wouldnt do it again

id go the ca18det or 3s-fe/gte way, wont cost bugger all more but youl have a beter set up
