Its not a case of biggest size possible its about getting the mix right as has already been mentioned. Small enough to allow it to spool faster and large enough to not restrict it once its at maximum boost.

Thats it exactly. Drag cars have no exaughst because they don't care if it spools early they want no restriction at max boost.

got the piping free, dumpy bigbore was 148, the u bend was 25, the adapter was 15, and the muffler was 135.

so that comes to a total cost of $323 and ill be attempting all the welding myself :)

cobys = shit according to all the professionals, also bear in mind, my dumpy exhuast was 150, which is half of the price, if i had mild steel out the end, it would only be $175, and if i use a coby instead of a proper exhaust would only be $125. all goes down to personal preference, at a muffler shop i was quoted $650 for what im going to do for $320. i would have went coby, but i want to try make my exhuast more legit, im going for performance, not loudness, as new laws are coming out early next year, apparently we all must have 2 proper mufflers in our cars, and cant be much louder than factory. pigs will also be cracking down harder on exhuasts and will be pink stickering more cars, meaning we will all have to go to testign stations and get fucked over for every other little thing wrong with out cars. im building this exhuast so when this law comes into place ill be half way there, and all ill have to do it put a proper muffler on the rear(stainless steel bigbores arent counted as mufflers/neither are cobys) this is all according to a couple of exhaust shops ive spoken too.

loud exhausts are shit after a while, i have had a straight thru no mufflers + a big bore on the end on the tina for over a year now, anyone that knows my car will agree its up there with one of the loudest cars they know.

if i could have a completely silent exhaust with the performancei would :twisted: id love to be able to sneak around, after having people knowing your coming 100m away.

nah, its rotary styles :P i wanted to stay away from cobys beucase of the laws that "might" be coming in next year. so i got a barrel muffler whcih is offset, but seriously its a coby inside, i can see straight thru it, its just on a diagonal. its undercover, beucase when its in, how are they gonna know what the setup is inside, for all they know it is more or less a factory item. but i know different :twisted:

well kind of, but its offcenter( on a diagonal from one corner to the other, and has a way larger barrel than a coby, its about 20cm wide, 40cm long 10cm high. so alot more noise is absorbed inside it.

I think you believe too much of what the people selling you stuff tell you....

thats only half of it. i dont want a loud car anymore, im over the craze, and deaf from me last car. and if new laws are supposily coming in, then i want to make sure my car is all legit, becuase those piggies arent scamming another cent off me.

I'm running a stock system (2", 1 plain resonator about half way back) with a straight thru oval 2-1/4" muffler on the rear, 2-1/4" aluminsed steel pipe/tip.

muffler is bigger bod size than the stock replacement that was on there, sounds alot better, and has little restriction. possibly a tiny bit of back pressure due to it having an expansion chamber in the middle, but that's negligible given the slightly bigger pipe size of the muffler itself over the rest of the system.

noise wise, it's barely louder at idle, or low revs. at 100kph it's jsut like the stock system, although noticeably more responsive, and more top end than stock due to less restriction.

over 3krpm to about 4200, it's a bit louder, gets a litle bit of a drone going under light acceleration (probably fuck all but the hatch body style, without a parcel tray in there makes it resonate a bit) and then it flattens out and is a tad louder than stock, but not unpleasant right to redline in all gears... including top :D

used to have a tiny resonator and a stainless on the ae86, was mentally loud.

mini used to rock a resonator and that's it. ask sparkle - when i passed the bus on way to school it used to rattle the bus to bits....

my thoughts now - no point in it being mega loud. although quiet sucks alot of the time... nothing like a nice note.

and i'd rather a bit of old style rally/race rasp than deep droning.

plus the cops dont hassle you if you can drive passed, button of and not hear anything... rules.

wof guys often dont care so long as it's not mentally loud either..

i hate the boyracer stereotype, and loud exhaust is the first sign. ive had a mega loud exhuast, had my fun with my first car and thrashed the fuck outa it. now its time for a nice cruising car, ive already spent a couple of grand on this car getting it mint so may aswell not be let down on the exhaust, all im after is something which isnt loud, but if i rev it those little cunts in there jappas know it has some balls, also one which doesnt wake up the whole street when i roll on home early hours of the morning quite a few nights a week.

I dont know what the VTNZ people are going to do, but after my last warrant there (the v3000) the guy came up to me;

So there are the ones out there that will let it slide.... Providing you dont have the wanky hollow bark of the "Hey Mr Magoo, I got $150 for a full system and I want it loud as" people.

im just having the 2 cobys with no bigbore, i like having just a pipe sticking out the back, looks better than a rice cannon, but different cars have different looks.

totally agree! my car looks mean with its pipe, fucken cunts at shop i got another quote from were like put an RPS muffler on.

Got a 2.25" on the Capri with sport muffler in the middle and a carbon fibre rice tip which needs chnaging when I get round to it. Set me back $250 for the exhaust, then another $150 when the sport muffler killed itself like 6 months later and $250 for the rice cannon = ripoff.

Yea fully agree aye. Was going to go down to a 2 1/4 when I put the Pinto in, but then thought id just try it with the 2.5" and as I've said, its surprisingly quiet.. can't even hear it while cruizing at 100k, unless its under load, like going up a hill or whatever. Just sounds really throaty, and when you rev it you can tell it has balls..

Was at a mates place and his old man was sitting outside, he was like wtf.. that doesnt sound like an Escort :lol:

Agree with retep130 about just having a straight pipe out the back aswell, rather than a hori big RPS or something...
