Never had one of these as a kid, and saw one semi local (same island) with a buy now of $30 so pulled the trigger not knowing anything about it, apart from one blurry pic on TM. thought if it was rubbish I'd just use the frame to build a special. Mate picked it up for me and delivered to home so I could check it out... Think it's early 80's version going by graphics and chrome carrier, (date code on brake lever says hub was made in 1980)... and was pleased to see it has the Sachs Duomatic coaster hub, had assumed it was a poverty spec single speeder so that's a win (these hubs go for decent money Stateside). It's all there, apart from grips, and seat & tyres are fucked, so looked for bits... Ali let me down for grips surprisingly, but found some retro white ones via eBay France with cheap postage so grabbed them, then looked for tyres. These came with the 20" x 1 3/8" rim in NZ (37-451) so are a little hard to find. Found some whitewall Michelins in Italy that looked ok, and for $62 delivered it was a done deal. Also grabbed a seat from @MightyJoe on here, $10 bargain... Chain was seized almost solid, it bent in about 3 places, so 15 mins on the wire wheel and it looked much better, gave it a bath in old ironhead oil afterwards...

Oddball bolt suppliers in New Zealand?
Lord Gruntfuttock replied to Mark_Fleming's topic in Tech Talk
E Hayes has a decent selection of Barry-spec fasteners on their shelves. Have trays of teeny BA screw threads, Whitworth bolts etc. Used to have old-school bike crank cotter pins too but haven't seen them for a while... -
I'm running a Badlands flasher module on the ironhead that times out after 11 secs. This is fine for normal turns but sucks when you're at an intersection and you have to keep hitting button. I'd rather have no timer but 30 seems a good compromise, long enough to let you sit a while, yet turns off if you forget...

Interesting. I use KY jelly when pulling cables thru bars etc, cos it's water based and doesn't affect insulation. Have also used hair spray to install grips, as slides on wet and it dries tacky. Just had vision of burly blokes buying talcum powder, hair spray and KY at supermarket for their bike projects...

Small capacity bikes are stupidly fun, can either idle everywhere on a big capacity sports bike, or race like fuck on a wee shitter...

pic I had on file, can't remember how exactly they fit to engine but seem solid enough... -
I've rigged bike tanks to a tumbler with a box of 3/16" square brass nuts inside. Worked well Have heard of people strapping car tanks to concrete mixers.

Great read, enjoyed seeing progress and the colour scheme with shadow transfers is a win. Never get hung up on doing your own thing (unless it is a true rarity/collectible). Whatever you do to something like this is far better than leaving it rusting in a hedge. Well done...

Surf to City tomorrow and I'm biking with some 7 yr olds. Got the old girl out, wiped some rust off and fitted a taller steering stem from Ali, now fits me better. Also fitted some Ali-sourced grips and a leather bag. Had meant to do heaps more but this has been parked since 2015, be nice to spin the wheels tomorrow... I'm picking I'm going to wish I'd fitted the Sturmey Archer wheel halfway through...- 13 replies

Back on deck and having lost momentum spent some money on new tyres to get back into things. Then thought an engine stand would make life easier/tidier... Cut some 100 x 10 flat into bits and grabbed some scrap RHS from the tip... and shaped the tabs to fit around the engine cases... And badly welded together, wish I could do it with less grinding...

Think they are measured from the elbow inside bend? Pay to check, but think Ali sellers have good info and you've got good ones to measure so should be sweet...

Tried to re-use spokes on my TT. Used heat, penetrating fluid and a really good spoke spanner. Still bust some. Look up the part number for spokes and check EBay, partzilla etc. Can get some pretty cheap sometimes... [Edit] or Aliexpress, see a few sellers offer spokes by size. Might be able to replace broken ones?

So seems a heavy steel engine cradle can be sent to NZ via Youshop for $37, yet a pack of cheap gaskets costs $51...? Can only assume it is in a giant box and the volumetric weight is screwing me. Can't consolidate apparently. Didn't even need the gaskets tbh, only bought them cos they were cheap. Ah well...- 27 replies

Lord Gruntfuttock’s 1975 Ironhead Café Racer…

Absolutely, you see so many builds that have aaaall the ingredients but just look a bit, wrong. I re-made the tank mounts several times till things lined up, made a few cardboard seat pan/rear humps, and even the likes of stripe dimensions take a bit of effort to get right. Still looks awkward from some angles, but given it was an ugly duckling to start with, and is a stock IH frame, I'm pretty pleased with the overall look... (It's going to lose some old-school aesthetics with new Kawasaki-sourced switchgear, but should be better to use, and I'd rather be riding than sitting stranded with style-points)... Incidentally, Lowbrow has the best tracking system. Been following the updates on my engine stand and had to look up the towns on GoogMaps... Be interesting to see what Youshop charge from Portland -> NZ- 27 replies

Lord Gruntfuttock’s 1975 Ironhead Café Racer…

Been riding this old girl for the last week during Munro challenge, and forgot how much I enjoyed it... Sadly the oil situation is getting out of hand, so might put rego on hold and start the work that needs done. After sitting for any length of time the primary case fills and needs draining before I can change gears, suspect a leaking main shaft seal. Primary should hold around 900mls from memory, this pan was half full when it finished draining to correct level, so a good 4-5 litres of frothy goop came out... Once drained however the old thing ran like a champ, and a good time was had talking bikes with the many visitors. I did have some starting issues due to failing pushbuttons, and the smoke and oil leaks are getting a tad embarrassing, so my list of tasks goes: Fix main seal leak Fix other oil leaks, stripped threads etc Replace starter motor contacts Replace starter rubber seals Replace horrible HD switchgear/master cylinder Re-lace front wheel with twin disc front hub Fabricate caliper brackets, fit and fettle brakes install electronic ignition Install kick starter Re-route oil lines Fabricate rear sets Change to RH shift (reverse pattern) and LH brake General tidy-up Snapshot of oil leaks, it's everywhere man... Before I parked her up I did a warm engine compression test, had a moment of panic as first test was only round 100psi, till I remembered to open the throttle, both cylinders were just over 150 psi, which was pleasantly surprising (has leaked down a bit before pic taken)... And plugs were a nice light brown... So seems there is nothing too wrong with it, only really concerned that once I start it'll sit in bits while I faff about get on with life. With decent brakes and switchgear, and not having to drain/get covered in oil I would probably use it much more however, so that's the incentive. Plus how cool would it be kicking this beast into life next to all the overly chromed, catalogue Hardleys... So that's the plan, as of Feb 2019. I already have most of the bits required, and have just bought an engine bench stand, so that'll help...- 27 replies
