Kimjon's Subaru drift trike

Recommended Posts

Title sounds cooler than it is, but Subaru make a line of small engines (Robin) for things like concrete vibrators, water pumps, generators etc...

One of these appeared on trademe for a price I couldn't resist, so logically another drift trike had to be made.

That's about as far as I've got today. More to come :-)

There was the remains of an old clutch still attached to the motors crankshaft.

Holy Moly!!! What a mission removing this became. I ended up making this "tool" in order to the job done:

It worked, but it didn't exactly lie down and take it. Bloody knuckles and lots of swearing...then pop! Got there in the end.

What axle do you use?

I have been toying with the idea of building one "for my kids"

Anything cheap on trademe.

My preference is quad bike axles as they're cheap and mostly good to go with brakes and provision to hold a sprocket.

This one uses an actual gokart axle. It's more expensive, but makes for an easy job, as you can buy any bolt on parts off the shelf to make it work. Of course, to keep the cost down I'm making/adapting stuff e.g. I'm using a wheel hub to hold a cheap sprocket, rather than buying an expensive sprocket carrier.

My ones are all lessons in doing shit ona budget. At best guess, they'd cost about $300 doing it this way V's about $1500 to buy the proper stuff all new.

Sweet.

Is it easy enough to put cart wheels on a quad axle?

Kind of. If you get a 110cc mini quad axle, you can cut the hubs down to fit and re drill the holes

I can't put my hands on a photo of the hub right now...but search under my name and I've done about 4 other drift trike builds on here with step by step how to...

In a nutshell the more money you try to save, the more work it creates.

The front end was fucked. Luckily I had a spear one leftover from the "Mike trike" project.

Between the two front ends I can salvage something workable.

I'm also experimenting with this seat idea. I'm not in love with it...but figure I've come this far, may as well see it through. Perhaps a few dimple die holes to make it look the part?

Then I turned up a sexy retaining plug for the stem, as it was missing one.

One of the issues often encountered when cobbling shit together is that the part you need is often missing, and the substitute is the wrong size.

My steering stem was "wiggly"... so I adapted this bike part to solve that issue.

boom! No more "wiggling wiggly bits".

  • 1 month later...

After 10hrs making shit for other people I walked inside...then had an epiphany for the drift trike!

IMG_20180414_195656.thumb.jpg.bc6230fd4d7cae4e0c25c6d372c9ed65.jpg

So, back into the shed to act on the idea. You see, anyone can solve a problem by throwing money at it...but cobbling shit together on the cheap takes ideas and time.

I now have some solutions to finally move this project forwards again using a combination of junk I already own...i.e.free!

Rear assembly done:

Motor with governor removed the lazy way (I'll tidy this up later). And I modified a honda GX200 velocity stack and performance air filter to fit this motor. I was very happy to see mikuni make the carburetor for these Subaru motors, so at least you know it's quality.

Everything will get a clean up and paint after I test it.

This is so rad, and I am thinking the same as Valiant ^. Where does one ride said trike, so I have additional justification beyond my kids needing one? Noting that wanting to appear on police 10-7 is something that I grew out of a few years ago...

Mine gets thrashed at home, as I put down about 300m2 of concrete "for the kids to play on". A drunk chick hit my house once...and I really can't throw too many stones, as I crashed into our people mover (yes a little part of my soul did die bringing home a people mover).

There's even been reports of a drunken lookalike diving it on the road...but that came from an unreliable source?

The main thing is that once enough alcohol is added you won't give two fucks how old or silly you look :-)

Am so sold on this, been checking out the one on yer other thread and looks ridiculously fun. Ive got a fair bit of asphalt wonder how that'd go...

How did you design it is there extensive forum-based literature or did you just make it up? Your other one looks a bit light on power is that why you going 180cc? Have always wanted to build something around a CBR mc19 motor but I spose that might be a tad much...

This is the 5th one I've built. Or should I say building.

This one below is only 50cc. I've since put an expansion chamber and walbro carburetor on it. It has zero torque...but goes well once revs get up. It's underpowered, but still lots of fun.

IMG_20170117_212334.thumb.jpg.5bcc9941dd277d3e71309a779fa622b5.jpg

This is 49cc, a bit of mild engine work plus expansion chamber...goes like a rocket!

IMG_20171016_183830.thumb.jpg.0b82ce144bcce1e3d08e6c3332e2a18c.jpg

This is 212cc, pulls like a school boy!!! Power to burn...perfect motor for these in my opinion.

IMG_20171221_201813.thumb.jpg.2405265ca617c982f4411cbe47cfa406.jpg

The one I'm building now will have similar power to the "Mike trike".

Asphalt would be fine...you'll just wear out the plastic quicker on the tyre sleeves. No big deal, its cheap and they're still making it.

I kind of make these up as I go. Always looking for secondhand parts to keep the cost down. It also adds a bit of character so each one comes out differing from the last one.
