I think I have mentioned this before but:

Fenix and other cheap Chinese radiators have a 30% failure rate. All this means is that if you fit one to your car don’t ten go out and drive the full length of the country. Fit it, run it up to temp in the garage. Do a few laps of the block. That way if it fails your are close to home.

If it doesn’t fail immediately then you are probably all good to go.

Other things to know about them is that they normally require some modifications to fit correctly.

We put one in my mates RX-8 and other then a wee jiggle to make it fit he’s had 40,000kms worth of trouble free motoring.

Also, if it is one of the 30% that do fail they will normally swap it.

Yeah I def had to modify the locating tags on mine..

I have decided to go with the $600 re core option,

Saw about 20 brand new Chinese radiators with factory repairs, some of them were on the core tubes in the middle to stop leaks, and the one I was looking at getting was 10mm to short

Who's doing the re-core?  I got estimated around $800 last week and Rockauto have no rx7 style brass radiators in stock -

Trying to avoid the cheapy alloy ones.

the other thing great about the factory rad is it will fit with 100% certainty without any additional pain in the arse things later on e.g. now the spanner doesn't fit to undo the water pump or some other stupid thing that always happens when you modify cars.

Thanks SOHC - good to know i didn't go ahead with this guys estimate!

Check to see what the quote is for though. From memory the G1 radiators were only 2 core and we used to upgrade this to a performance 3 core. It was 20 years ago so my memory might be fuzzy but it’s worth double checking.

As you will know, heat kills Rotaries...

Yeah, most of the radiators got re-cored in the mid 90’s and it was common practise to upgrade it. Thought it was from 2 upto 3. Could have been 3 to 4 but either way you don’t wont to go back down a core...
