BDA780 Posted May 19, 2015 Share Posted May 19, 2015 I'd say the stamping deforms the grains enough that the acid will be able to etch more easily around those boundaries than the boundaries of unaffected grains Yeah pretty much this. The acid etchs the martensitic phase of the steel (work hardened section) creating a dark patch when viewed under light.
