2nd Chance
Hey guys, Just got my hands on an old smiths tacho for my mk2 cortina. Thing is I'm planning of changing out the points for an electronic unit, maybe an optic switch. Anyone able to tell me if the tacho will still read (accurately) if I go down this route? Also what brand should I go for/ stay away from? Thanks
ajg193
Should do, (older) tachos run off the coil. My tacho kept working when I put an electronic distributor in.

Flash
I've got a HEI distributor in my ride and my old bullet style tacho still works perfectly.
Testament
provided you are still running a conventional coil and can take the tacho signal from the same place as it is now (coil negative or coil positive, depening what type of tacho it is) then it should work the same as the electronics are only chaning the switch that is firing the coil. if you change to an msd or multiple coil ignition system - then things change. 2nd Chance
Awesome, thanks guys. Yep it runs from the coil so all good.
cubastreet
There are two types of smiths tacho. If the tacho says rvi on it (induction loop), it won't work with an electronic dizzy. If it days rvc, it will.
Banga
The Smiths tacho out of a gt cortina I have didn't work as its rvi, just purchased a kit off ebay to convert it to rcv to allow it to work. It's on its way from the UK now.
2nd Chance
Ahh nuts, it says RVI. Oh well, guess the points stay for now.
srf
I am running a inductive loop type tach with full electronic ignition at the moment and lumenition before that. So long as the basic wiring stays the same it should work. Unless I am missing something.
