Seedy Al
Hey chaps. I have a 1980 escort here that is over heating. So far have found a pin hole in the radiator and possibly fucked thermostat. However. Jyst looking at the viscos fan. How easy should these be to turn? This one seems pretty lose.... I assume normal way to check would be to have motor running and try stopping it with a bit of wood or something? ? Any help would be lovely. Dont want to fix these few small things only to find the fan is fucked also. Thanks. The seedy allan
Beaver
AFAIK it relies on the heat in the oil to make it turn (ie it wont turn when cold), so maybe run the car up to temp and then shut it off and see if the fan is stiff?
vivaspeed
I used to have a pinto Cortina ages ago that had a similar issue with the fan. Apparently most early Ford viscous fan assemblies were rubbish. Viscous fan is meant to spin freely when cold and as the guts of it (oil, wax, something?) heat up they are meant to go firm IIRC. Run it up to temp, see if the fan is tighter than when cold?

Mof
You're both bang on. There's a bi metal that opens a valve when hot and lets the viscous fluid thru and almost locks it up yada yada There's a guy in chch that reconditions them. He's very good I'm sure there's others around the country Or backyard repair. Open it up put in a piece of rag in and reassemble. I did this once on the side of the road
Mof
Has anyone ever put stop leak through the engine? That shit is great for blocking up radiators. Might pay to get the radiator rodded
My name is Russell
You guys are not even close, i think you will find the answer is to put a pinto in it. Thanks
Rookie
Also the radiators are pretty bad for getting blocked, might be worth getting it rodded.
two_days_late
Think I have a spare radiator in the Hutt if you wanna borrow it to try out
Seedy Al
Oh yeah will be getting the rad rodded for sure. The color of brown that came out was not a good sign haha. Thanks guys. Will get it up to temp once everything else is sorted and see about this fan
