waylowkp
hey all, have been toying with the idea of turboing my 4k ke70, was just wondering if anyone had carried this out and/or if they could recommend a cheapish way to do so?? not after a huge power jump just a bit more go and alot of noise, any suggestions greatly appreciated
BlownCorona
recently i found out that honda city turbos were a carb turb setup, and this sort of made sense in my head with turboing a starlet. both 1300cc so should be pretty well matched. but i have no idea on the availibility or even plausibility of this idea. CaMpylobacter
just get an S.U carb from a turbo mg montego. make a manifold slam a suitable turbo on there. one of those little ct9s (i think) off a gt starlet could be the ticket. toyabusa
I used the factory 4k carb in a blow through setup with an adjustable fuel pressure reg, worked sweet.
phatt20
this^ cheap reliable set up is a malpassis carb turbo reg or similar, efi inline fuel pump, prepped 4k carb, limit mechanical advance (or fit boost retard diaphram) done a few like this, work real good. toyabusa
Lol had a boost retard setup but it went better without it just detonating a bit haha.
DJZ
Keep in mind you will need to pay for certification and the other costs associated with it (drive shaft hoops etc etc).
H05TYL
Keep in mind you will need to pay for certification and the other costs associated with it (drive shaft hoops etc etc). Assuming it lasts longer than 6 months?
RUNAMUCK
Look for a turbo like a T2/Airresearch m10. Or even a ct12 off a starlet. I reckon drawthrough is easiest.
waylowkp
cheers for the input guys, dont suppose anybody has completed this and could list roughly what parts are needed and a guess-timated price??
HighLUX
$150 for the blowthru turbo carb thats F/S in the parts section $300-400ish for a good turbo $500ish for a custom turbo manifold $500-600ish for misc parts, fuel pump, fuel reg, gaskets intercooling etc It adds up pretty fast
toyabusa
Get a small turbo, adapt it to the exhaust manifold. Blow through the factory carb, you can intercool a blow through if you want. I didn't. Electric fuel pump, I had mine mounted in the engine bay sucking from the tank. Adjustable fuel reg, rising rate probably better. I had the return from the reg Tee'd back into the inlet of the pump so I didn't have to run a return all the way to the tank. You will need to play with the jet and fuel pressure to get it running right, rich is good while setting it all up. Back the timing off too and then creep up on it. It's pretty easy, don't over complicate it just have a go. I only ran 6psi but it went really well, comparable or better than my efi engine which made 72kw at the wheels. I used it as my daily for over a year, blew a lot of exhaust manifold gaskets. Blew the head gasket at an autocross event because it was overheating and I didn't stop until the radiator tank exploded.
BlownCorona
if your in chch, there is a gt starlet there with its turbo still attached, would be cheap and potentially in good condition, easy to pull it off and check it out,
