mad_max
Got a 4k dx wagon as a daily and a bit of fun every now and then and its all of a sudden gained some issues It started making a noise which i assumed was tappets which happened after a skid attempt from my sober driver one night. It wasnt too bad but then all of a sudden it started a loud tappet like noise when reving and wont idle properly (sounds like a rota) its like its down a cylinder or something. Anyone find this familiar? or know what it could be? I dont know alot about them and dont want to rip it all apart unless i know what im looking for. Could just be easier to get new motor... Cheers
Seedy Al
Sounds like maybe a rocker or something has come totally loose and is not working at all. Pull off rocker cover and inspect / set all your tappets.
Mitch.W
that tapping noise could be your intake/exhaust gasket onto the head has broken thats a pretty common problem with them. takes like 15 mins and like 30bux to do so its not a major. mad_max
Yea, my mate told me it could be that, so just chuck a new gasket on it you reckin? Might as well give it a go, easier than transplant
mad_max
Is there a way i can check if thats what it is? would that be a reason for it not idling and having next to no power?
Steelies
have you checked stuff under the rocker cover?
Mr Revhead
Is there a way i can check if thats what it is? would that be a reason for it not idling and having next to no power? Possibly if it's the intake. But if it is the intake I wouldn't think the noise would be as described. Yank that cover off and have a look. Is easy. Bonus you will get your hands dirty and get to use tools.
Mr Revhead
Oh, easy to check the exhaust, will be leaving carbon deposits. And to check if its intake, while it's running spray some crc/brakekleen etc around the manifold. revs will increase if it's sucking in there
b1600v8
You need to get that rocker cover off, real easy. Could be a collapsed lifter if no obvious damage under rocker cover? Edit: if you still can't find problem be worth doing a compression test.
Dell'orto
Probably a manifold gasket leak, does it have extractors? How high did they rev it when doing skids? Wont be a collapsed lifter, ought to be solid in that
mad_max
Been under cover, looks algood, Sussed a replacement 5k but would rather find the problem with this to keep as spare. Sounds like something loose in there or something, if i keep at steady rpm theres a rattle every now and then but if accelerating it overpowers every other sound, can still hear after trying to drown out with music (figured if i cant hear it its not happening.lol) sounds normal at idle (with choke as wont idle untill hot (used to idle str8 away)
KKtrips
Its super hard to diagnose audible faults over the net - most probably pay to have someone who knows a thing or two to take a gander at it.
