d.p.n.s
im 6 linking the rear of my van and have used a shortened falcon diff the diff head is a wee bit off center. im just setting up the watts link and remember reading somwhere that the 2 link arms for the watts have to be the same lengh is this right? or will it work with 1 shorter then the other? cheers dan
phr34kr
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watt's_linkage Wikipedia suggests they do need to be equal, however it wouldn't be hard to check using a few pieces of steel/wood/whatever and marking where the center point travels on paper. ProZac
Trying to picture it... I think you'd find the diff would move in a pronounced arc with one significantly shorter than the other... In which case you may aswell just stick with a panhard rod... Must be possible to add a panhard mount to the center of the diff housing though? Even if it's not in the center of the diff head. Good to hear your sticking around in NZ man
Seedy Al
Yeah ideally the same length is key here
mikuni
You could offset the mounting points to keep the arms the same length? But heres a good thread where a dudes cadded shit up to see what the deal is. Looks like if you have a long link in there you can get away with very different lengths. If you can afford a couple of mm offset in the diff then you could just run a short link, because a long link will probably smash on the body/ground I would have thought. http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=53648
d.p.n.s
see the problem is the falcon diff had 1 short and 1 long axle so the diff head was off to one side and the watts link was moved to make it equal lenghts links . i shortend the falcon diff by cutting down the long side to match the short and using 2 short axles so the diff head is realy off to one side and the factory watts link is miles off. so i think ill have to weld up a mount off the diff itself to mount the watts.thats not a problem i just wanted to know if i could get away with differant lenght watts links but NO. thanks for the help lads dan
mikuni
away with differant lenght watts links but NO. The link I posted above says you can..
Truenotch
If you're going to re-do the mount then it's a good idea to go for a body mounted watts with rod brackets at each end of the diff. Less unsprung weight + roll centre that is constant with the body makes things easier to work out. They're not that complicated so it might be best to start again. xsspeed
Ah I see, was trying to work it out with mid point still attached to diff.
d.p.n.s
am i right in saying that the top one is a watts link and the lower one a mumford link? ive been doing some looking into this and i like the idea of the pivot mount on the body as i will be able to make more holes so i can adjust the roll center . these pics are of the mk2 escort van being built in the u.k that gave me the idea to build mine cheers lads dan
