wickmyster
How wide are escort diffs? I can measure a mk 1 capri's length if you want? Hi crazy_rich, I measure escort diff tomorrow, can you measure from drum face to drum face? (widest point not including studs
wickmyster
Anglia and escort diff widths...are they the same??? what is the difference?
Brock-Lee
Pete, pm bart/RUNAMUCK, he built one of those phantom grip things and ran it at the drag strip for a couple of seasons IIRC.
Raizer
Anglia diff is narrower, but a few guys in the UK use them in Escorts since they let you run wheels with more offset/dish without having to flair the arches. Its not that hard to move the mounts over on them if you can weld. From memory the 105E panel van diff is the narrowest of the Anglia axles
wickmyster
OK thanks for that, wish I had deep dish rims rather than fwd offset 15s.
wickmyster
crazy_rich, my escort diff is 134.5cm I think...hope it is accurate measurement
crazy_rich
oh yep, capri facelift m1 is 1385 drum to drum, and about 1025 between spring perches.
wickmyster
Ok that would be a good width diff for my escort, is that a standard Mk1 capri diff width or same as the narrower baby atlas width?
crazy_rich
I measured a standard 1974 2000gt diff. I'd say the mk1 v6 atlas would be the same width. Cant confirm however.
Valiant
Hi wickmyster. I think Baby atlas diffs were never fitted to mass production cars, they were sold as an upgrade for Escort through Ford parts departments. Mk1 capri has "Narrow Atlas" and Mk2/3 has "Wide Atlas". Watch out also because some earlier Cortinas came fitted with a back hat diff too but it was much smaller/weaker than an Atlas. Unless you can get a Capri diff very cheap it would be worth finding out about a Quaife LSD and some thin wheel spacers for your Escort diff. wickmyster
Ok thanks, good to know, Escort spring mount centers are 940 from center to center, so capri would be an easiest upgrade seeing as they are 4x108, but there is a kit on trade me to change capri struts to falcon stud patter...tempting, but then id have to fork out for new rims.... V6 capri struts, capri OHC 2L, Capri 5 speed, might as well get a capri diff
wickmyster
What ratios do mk3-5 cortinas come out with???
eke_zetec_RWD
3.45 and 3.77 i think. watch out some of the cortinas had a diff that looks like a atlas but its internally small and weak.
wickmyster
Ok, cheers for the heads up, I have never seen the underside of a Cortina, how can you tell the difference between the Cortina diffs?
wickmyster
Is the 2.3 V6 cortina guaranteed to have the strong diff? If you have any clues about Cortina diffs can you please comment
Valiant
Here; ATLAS AXLES Baby ... 48.5" long (wide) Narrow (Mk1 3 litre Capri) .. 50" long (wide) Standard (Mk2 & 3 Capri) .. 52" long (wide) Standard Mk1 & 2 Escort Axles: English axle 48.5" wide Koln: European piece of chocolate fitted to mk2 escorts and to be avoided at all costs An English matches the dimensions of the baby atlas, however many people incorrectly think a baby atlas is the one fitted to a mk1 3.0 litre capri when in fact that's a narrow atlas. An original baby atlas was a motorsport special order item True atlas has a 7.5 inch crown wheel, Weak Kolin type has a 6ish inch crown wheel. Aussie Cortina use Borg Warner 74/75 series diffs like Falcon/Valiant/Commodore. I'm not sure about crown wheel size variations with the Aussie Cortina diff. In my experience if you want a strong LSD with a 3.5/1 ratio in the back of your Escort you need to... Buy a Quaife or similar LSD center for your Escort diff with a sport crown wheel and pinion Or use a Capri Atlas with Quafie or similar LSD center and the gears that came in the Capri Atlas Or Find a LSD with the right ratio from another car or ute and get it shortened. Or hunt trade me until you find somthing that will work for you that has been built already.
wickmyster
Here; ATLAS AXLES Baby ... 48.5" long (wide) Narrow (Mk1 3 litre Capri) .. 50" long (wide) Standard (Mk2 & 3 Capri) .. 52" long (wide) Standard Mk1 & 2 Escort Axles: English axle 48.5" wide Ahh, you are a legend!!! I have been looking for that info for ages! Yeah, I am not too worried about LSD, just want a strong good ratio diff. My escort is not my every day driver, and when it gets driven, it get driven hard!!...I have two engines, I think my current one is in need to a rebuild... It will be my everyday driver once it is finished, and so I still want to be able to drop in my worked pinto and enter a drag comp and take it to track days etc. I used to run a shortened Zypher diff in a 3.8 Buick V6 morry, and that has an awesome ratio...with I knew where that ended up!! It was non lsd of course and I never had a problem... always spun both wheels
Valiant
Start with a Borg Warner so you can atleast upgrade later. 3.0 VL Commodore used a 3.45/1 crown wheel and pinion. The axles can be welded and redrilled to 4 stud for not much.
Gaz
$400 is cheap as to shorten a diff. If you have to spend more then it isnt worth doing so to a shitty cortina diff. Shorten something worthwhile which has the avaliability to upgrade to LSD when you get some spare $$$. Gaz
wickmyster
Is the VL gear interchangeable with XA falcon stuff? I have a 2.92 XA falcon diff sitting in my shed. Would a XF LSD head go into the XA housing? I am a bit ignorant on Borg warner obviously..
