Unclejake
I am trying to find some material to make a cam lobe out of. This will just be a single cam lobe operating like a bellcrank on a moving rope (like found in a rock climbing ascender) to act as a rope brake for a charity project I am building. The lobe needs to be 20-25mm thick but I need to be able to weld to it which makes cast steel less attractive and alloy no good. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I could rob to either: 1) Find a preformed cam lobe 20mm thick or greater 2) Find some 25mm thick stainless (about the same size as the palm of your hand) that I could fabricate a cam out of? Thanks ever so much etc. XXXOOOXXXanal
peteretep
Have you talked to a laser cutter? 20-25mm is getting toward the high end of thickness but as it's small it still wouldn't cost too much, less than 3 digits I would think, plus they can cut it almost to your exact shape. They can also do mild or stainless
Unclejake
I haven't talked to a laser cutter. Finding the materials has been what I was concentrating on I reckon I could make this cam lobe out of a stainless steel towball if anyone has one

jakesae101
I know for sure I can get a piece that's 10-15 mm thick may or may not be s/steel but would be 2 times the size your after
V8Pete
Stink. About 2 months ago I had a huge 25 mm plate cut and the offcut would've been ideal. 25 mm's like twice the price of 20 mm too.

Unclejake
^ I am not able to but friends will be there (racing) and they could grab a bit from you??? That would be so cool. Let my try and confirm the ideal thickness tomorrow. I should be able to work it out BubbleG - I thought about that, but would much rather a solid lump. Thanks though. Jif - that lobe would be cast wouldn't it?

Unclejake
Thanks for all the help team. I still can't work out the exact requirements so at risk of offending those who are trying to supply me stuff, I will do some harder thinking tomorrow. This project is getting complicated!
