coldturkey
So my little 1256cc engine has a stromberg carb on it...which I only just learned you need to keep topped up with oil. Ive only had the car about 3-4months, and have only had to top it up once. However, occasionally it will run like ass - so I pull over and if I lift the plunger out of dashpot and put it back in, it fixes it. Im thinking maybe the oil I used was too thick or something? It was some real thick oil that I use in my engine (10w30 or something i think). If this could be the problem, then how can I remove the oil and what should I put in it? The carb has been rebuilt in the last year by a specialist according the the previous owner. Edit: Added instead of creating new topic - Who knows where I can get a Stromberg CD150 carb kit? coldturkey
sewing machine oil is the go Yea, i've heard this, and according to some pages I've googled, ATF is a good cheap alternative too. But you reckon my oil could just be too thick, causing it to stick or something?
KKtrips
2 biggest problems with strombergs is the diaphragm is torn (about $15 or less for a new one) and the oil is too thick - run something very thin - ATF will do or compressor oil - sewing machine oil is good but not that easy to get.. The diaphragm is easy enough to replace but you just have to make sure that all the little locating tags on the rubber are in the right place on the piston and the body of the carb.. I'll try find a pic.. here are the 2 locating tags in the diaphragm.. edit - fixed broken link in photo
KKtrips
thick oil won't be causing it to stick - it'll be the damper - it acts just like thick oil inside a shock..

If I pull off the top of the dashpot should I be able to see if the diaphragm is ok?
CaMpylobacter
I saw 'singer oil' last week somewhere. I can't for the life of me remember where, though. It's the perfect stuff. May have been mitre 10. You can get it from sewing machine shops too less economically, there's often a product at hardware stores and even supermarkets called '3in1 oil' which i believe is very similar. coldturkey
So is SAE 20 quite a light/thin oil? Or is it thick, cause then im back to square 1 (the oil in there is real thick).
