Beaver
hey all, whats the best way to remove/smooth the welds on widened steels? its just penetration as they are welded from the outside. Just a grinder? might be a bit tricky. Or would a die grinder thingy work? Are they any good at removing material? cheers
thegreatestben
chuck in lathe.
Beaver
dont have one.... its not much material, only a few mm. just looks silly when the wheel is painted (painted one today)
Simon
Yea just get the grinder in there if you can. Do it with the wheel on the front wheel of the car so it spins whilst grinding to get an even grind. Don't rush it. If you take your time there is no reason it won't come out mint. Beaver
sweet, thats a mint idea. cheers
Brock-Lee
watch out that you dont grind into the surface of the wheel or it will be a cunt to get looking right once painted. id use one of these And go really slowly
Beaver
yeh that would be a bitch. Might drop into royce clive and see what they would charge me to clean them up.......

Simon
Yuck! Flip that, get hold of elite seeing you're local and get them to do it properly. I wouldn't have payed them till they had. P.S. thats way past grinding. Get someone to put them in a lathe.
Beaver
thats the worst wheel but yeh. they dont smooth them off anymore, ive had two sets done and they were btoh like this. others I have talked to are they same they used to do it but not anymore. Id actually rather go to someone else and have to paybe maybe 50 odd buks than go back to elite. it took them 4 weeks to fix one leaking rim.....fuck knows how long itl take to lathe 4 of them. I konw I should hit them up but im over caring, woudl rather just get it done elsewhere.
fuel
oh wow I would take that back - my rims came back with all that ground off already.
Beaver
yeh that was a while ago tho wasnt it phil? like i said, it seems to be the norm for them to leave as is now. just another reason they are dickheads

BobbyBreeze
I'd be refusing to pay if mine came back with welds looking like that?
T-Rex
Find someone with big swing lathe, profit. If you do decide to just grind, dont use a flap disk like daf cain said to use, you'll fuck it. You want grind the TOP off, then 60g that shit till the weld is flat then throw some 120g(z) at it then start getting you sand on. Or just bog the fuck out of it. My name is Russell
Yeah you can always skim a coat of bog . . . mitre ten do cheap / good flapper disk packs.
JasonK
I'd be using an air buff with those 36 grit roloc disks, make take some time but a lot less cahance of f*cking the wheel/taking them back
