Beaver
how much/if any play should there be in the rotor/dizzy shaft. the cortina has been pre-igniting after i turn if off, and if i put my foot down it just farts, and have bene told that its the timing (causing the pre-igniting atleast) ive noticed that there is quite a bit of play in one direction in the dizzy shaft, ie if can rotate one way quite a bit, but not the other. it was suggested that this is throwing out my timing at random times, as it doesnt always pre-ignite and on that note, can anyone tell me what else i can use a dizzy from? its a 1600 crossflow (1969 cortina) cheers
isnowi
You should be able to turn it one way, but there should be some spring resistance (assuming there is a mechanical advance mechanism) could be that the springs that stop the little weights from flying too far out are broken. Beaver
yeh there is spring resistance. could just be my timing is way out to start with. ill check that and then see if it still packs a sad.
Unclejake
Your running on issue will be caused by heat in the combustion chamber somewhere. Dizzy play is unlikely to be the fault. Timing too far advanced Combustion chamber fouled with carbon Running too lean
mjrstar
Is it still running Vacuum advance? if so disconnect it and see if it helps.

Horse25
i have a timing light if you dont have one, we could check when you bring that diff head around, also have checked your points gap?
David
Have you changed any other parts on the ignition or intake side of things lately? Like new sparkplugs changed the plug gapping (has the electrodes burnt away)? Different type of plugs new air cleaner Different carb or manifold Vacuum advance pickup on different part of manifold Vacuum leak at intake gasket Fuel bowl level too low or blocked fuel filter Due to the 1600 combustion chamber design it tends to run on from concentrated heat very easily. If the timing was always running too advanced you should be able to make the motor PINK when throwing it into a too higher gear and putting the load on. (not good for the motor if so). Can be hard to hear in the 1600 if the exhaust is loud. I would guess the Cortina runs the likes of a Lucas 25D4 dizzy with a thumb adjuster on the vacuum advance Instead of the FoMoCo type in the escort 1600cc cross flow? Mr.Mk1
Dizzy was the culprit in my old Cortina w/1600. I tried everything else and it was the shaft bearing which was work, throwing the spark around all mad-like. I dropped in a spare one I had, timed it and it was mint! Good point and you should be able to see the spark jumping around with the timing light
