My name is Russell
Just trying to work out how to do my driveshaft So i have an escort/cortina driveshaft At one end i need a hilux diff fitting the other a cosmos gearbox So now im stuck on the compatability and fitment to the new drive shaft The black Driveshaft is the hilux fitting, bottom escort So this end could be the easy end as you could chop it of at the tube and weld it onto the new length on the escort driveshaft. The hand held bit is the cosmos yoke the top escort/tina shaft As you can see the diamater tube is quite different and the connections at the rotating parts. So my problem is, is that all the sizes don't appear to be compatible for connecting them? Iv got no idea what needs to be done some advice would be greatly appreciated Mongol took me through the 1st step of how to pull them apart removing the cir clip makes it allot easier if only it didnt fly into my steel pile Am i trying to achieve the imposable Im getting details from mongol tomorrow of a guy in welly to shorten it. and from memory you want 15mm of float? Unclejake
The guy to see back in the day was Barnicol (sp?) Engineering in Naenae. He balances them too which I think is crucial.
d.p.n.s
you want to put the yoke in the gearbox and then pull it out 20mm for the float. if i was you mate i would just take it to a driveshaft shop or engineer as they will nee to be balanced. i just gave my nissan yoke and i 2 peice mk2 driveshaft to the guys i use down here and they will make me a one peice to the lengh i want with the u/j checked and all balanced for $300. dan

mikuni
Take it to a driveshaft fabrication and ballancing place. Its the only way. I can't see the pics but if one of the driveshafts isn't suitable for any reason (length, strength etc) they will use a different one and just put the yoke and universal on. Prices may be higher in the "recession" but typically for an end change and ballance I would expect to pay $150 and for the top end expensive setup with a hanger bearing moved and an extra universal put in with yoke should still be around the $400 mark. My driveshaft was $300 because it needing a sliding yoke put in. Both times I just rang the guy from ATL (who most of us use) and they came to measure up the car where it was to ensure no mistakes were made. Granted the car wasn't far away in both cases but still good that they were happy to do it.
My name is Russell
Cheers guys The Main thing I'm confused about is how do I fit the yoke to even dummy up the drive shaft for its length? Because i have 3 parts i need to make into one; drive shaft (escort) Yoke (Cosmo) Flange - diff (Hilux) So i need to put the yoke on the driveshaft before i can dummy it up to get the length and have the hilux one done after that. Do i need to get him to have a look at it and get him to fit the yoke 1st? Can it even be done? Basically i want to know how to fit the yoke to the driveshaft is it welded on or is some sort of adapter used to make it fit onto the fittings that are on the escort end now. The driveshaft should be strong enough.

d.p.n.s
sorry mate i forgot...the yoke just slides into the gearbox on its spline dan
My name is Russell
Ok sweet! So i can just do that and they can fit the bits to both ends? ... somehow Does that mean i shouldn't of pulled the yoke apart
d.p.n.s
Does that mean i shouldn't of pulled the yoke apart yes lol just take the lot into them with your measurments and the will make it all up and to your lengh dan
My name is Russell
Cheers man Will they have bits to replace one of the end caps as all the small bearings are in the bin now or will i need a re build kit from ripco or the likes? d.p.n.s
they should be able to sort it for you man
shizzl
ive used ADL (automotive drive line) in manakau in the past for rotorvans and ute conversions. I just measured from the end of the gearbox housing to the diff flange and they got er done.. just make sure the car is sitting where it should when its measured.. 2 days ago i got my stockcar driveshaft made up from a bighorn slip shaft i think it was the front driveshaft.. they just redrilled the flange and milled it down to fit in the diff flange. and changed the front flange over cos the UJ was fukt...cost me $50.. Hemi
Howat Industries Limited Add to My Address Book * 04-567 1471 * 10 Horlor St Naenae Lower Hutt thats the buggers , knew i wastn spelling hte anem right etc http://maps.google.co.nz/maps/mpl?ie=UT ... google&z=6 the last time i got somthing made i took down the end piece and told him what i wanted etc , e.g 700mm from g-box face to the diff flange. he made the tube scratch , dunno if he'd want to use the older tube as he wouldnt know how strong it was etc . My name is Russell
dunno if he'd want to use the older tube as he wouldnt know how strong it was etc . Oh true ... Thought the tube was extremely expensive? The one i have is fairly hearty Cheers bro! Will call them tomorrow hopefully they are open sat's
Gaz
That one you have isnt that hearty boe. You will have heaps of torque too. Maybe if it aint much difference you should get one made larger. Tell them the power your are making. I am contemplating a larger dia one and I wont be making the torque you are. Member the shaft is made for a 105hp pinto! Dont wanna it to snap and possibly flip ya whole car! Also when I was looking for shortening for my Cortina cheapest I foud in Welly was $300 over the phone. In Rotorua you can get it done, and balanced for half the price! And.. you need car and diff and gbox aprox sitting in the right place so the end float is right. My name is Russell
Yup Diff and box are 100% mounted in there correct place were they shall live. The drive shaft is 77mm OD which seems huge to me? (the hilux one is 75mm OD) The 4 door's is only like 45mm From what i remember about physics the larger your diameter the thinner your tube can be to achieve the same strength etc. The weakest point looks like it will be the yoke. The main danger of the DS breaking is that it will fly out n hit some1 isn't it? So says my mythbusters education they couldn't get the car to flip to save emselfs etc.
Gaz
Yeah but that large one may be tiny thin. Its from my Mk2 Cortina from memory which didnt even come with the pinto.. So really made for a 85 or so HP engine. Surely it wont be happy with 270hp! But prove me wrong so I can use my one the same! Likely hood of your car flipping if dshaft breaks is minimal but still there. Prob more likely to just be stranded somewhere and pissed off lol. My name is Russell
I would if thought it would be the joins that would be the most likely to fail? Would take a truckload of power to twist up a huge tube wouldn't it? will leave it to him to decide i have no idea
