Tightening nose bolt on diff.

Recommended Posts

Am picking an escort diff up tonight or the next and I need to change the drive shaft flange over.

I will rattle the nut off and replace the flange with the one that I need but then comes the problem. How do I know how tight to do the nut back up? There is a crush tube behind the nut.

I kinda want to do it properly so anyone know the correct procedure? or is it just an experience/feel thing?

Well if you do that then you would completely crush the crush tube which I don't think is good as stuff will bind. Id also say there is no specific torque because as the tube fatigues the torque would change.

The 'lash' is the distance between the crown wheel teeth and the pinion teeth.

It gets a little tricky on an old cw & pinion due to wear (the wipe pattern were one tooth has rubbed against another toothe for 40 years) but essentially use feeler gauges, read the manual, go slowly with the pinion nut and you can't go wrong.

Alternatively just rattle it up tight and chuck a banana skin in the oil

Fuck backlash, just crank it up for whiplash and weld inernals and do a skud

( not helpfull I know )

Whenever I used to change the flange on Escorts ( used to use Zephyr driveshafts and flanges for pinto conversions, now too rare/ easier options ) I used to just tighten them up and never had a problem, you have to really crank them to adjust/ crush tube and you only need it as tight as the nut yyou are undoing in the first place.

Which from memory I used to undo with a 3/8 bar and replace with same bar...

Could be wrong but I always thought Escort diff's had shims to adjust backlash and footprint

like quality cars..

i would of thought youd just rattle it up tight..

good heads up there gaz cos im about to change the flange over on my hilux diff...

is there a torque setting in a workshop manual for it? anyone?

dont quote me but i dont think hilux diffs have the same crush tube .

i rattle diff flanges up all the time but they dont have that siad crush tube in them .

when i did the diff pinion seal in my escort i marked the before and tightened to the same mark by hand and a tiny bit more . .. but yea do it properly , good learning exercise :)
