hey guys got the carby rebuilt and jetted for the eski but the fukn thing wont start, the gas that was in there was a few months old, possibly about 6 or 5 months old. will this be stopping me from starting? its getting fuel spark and all the goodness it needs but wont fire up. does the odd splutter and pop but wont run good on all cylinders.

Seems weird.Plug leads arent round the wrong way or something simple like that? Fuel shouldnt be that bad, wont be good but should still start, had cars with fuel older than that in them and theyve started.

does it run if you use engine start? plugs clean and gapped to spec? Timing right - check it 3 or 4 times its easy to cock up or for it slip off if you havent secured the distributor well enough, or get it 180 deg. out - done this myself plenty of times

gaybuzz. will double check the plugs gap and shit. weird part is it was running fine before i broke the acc cable, then i swapped it to a sidedraft now it wont start, the carby has been reco;d and is like new with the right jets and that, just turns over and over then pops every now and then. i cant understand whats wrong, i mean, i havent touched anything else... leads are the right way round... so annyoing i just want to do skids

That does sound very much like incorrect timing, check timing again and try to start while spraying some engine start down the carb.

Have you got a choke running on the sidie? We put the triple sidies on my brother's 240Z and once the fuel bowls filled up it just burst into life with a few splutters until it was warm, starting with the choke helps heaps though.

Are you sure there's no manifold leaks ?

the fuel in my track car is at least two years old, and it continues to start without a hitch, tho I shoulds probably puts some fresh stuff in and change the fuel filter at some point before I drive it any long distance (e.g. to taupo in two weeks)

hrmmm pretty sure theres not ay.. manifold is all torqued up n shit but i guess this could be a possibility. gona play with the timing now n see how i get on. whats the best way to check for leaks?

Little bit of of hose, hold one end close to your ear and then go around the edges where the manifold meets the head with the other end, you'll soon hear if there's something amiss, alternatively, there's no vacuum lines that were connected to your previous manifold that aren't on the new one? My old MkII started running like shit and the ex brought it round for me to look at and it was just a perished vacuum/breather hose causing all the trouble.

The best way is a can of brakeclean - but the motor has to be running first.

Spray brakeclean around the manifold and carb base and if the engine stumbles or stalls when you are spraying in one particular sport that is where your vacuum leak is.

Still think you have the firing order worng though.

$10 says you have the firing order wrong.

Orginal Escort motor? 1-2-4-3 and the dizzy spins anticlockwise.

Or 180 degrees out. Says he speaking from experience. I find that towing it down the road usually gets some life out of it. Eventually. If the timing's about right.

didnt get a chance to look at it today but the firing order is definatly correct. like i said, was running before i changed the carby and manifold. tis a pinto btw. and yea gona very hard to check for manifold leaks if its not going :doubt:

ok seems plugs no1 and 2 keep getting oiled up?? possibly from not getting any spark or from there being a bit too much oil in the motor? gona try swapping the plugs n see what happens
