im looking at rebuilding the old 1600 out of my mk2 cortina to put it into my escort, numbers on the engine block are 691M 6015BA i just wanted to know what this motor is like in comparison to the sport motor that is currently in my escort,im going to do the following port and polish head, mild cam,2L carb, extractors and 2inch exhaust with these in mind which would be the better motor to get power from?

cheers

Much of a muchness really.

The Mk2 Cortina engine is going to need bits off your Escort engine (like sump, oil pick-up, dipstick etc.) so you may as well do the Escort motor.

Polishing the head = bad (and pretty much impossible with cast iron anyway).

What is your budget?

it will work well mate but the block you want is a 711m they have thicker walls.

^ Completely true - but that is only of consideration if heading toward an 84/85mm bore. Without serious overboring the existing Escort engine will be good for a few extra horsepower without going nuts.

budget is really small just wanted to get a few new bits and pieces to get the motor running nice the only reason i even mention using the cortina engine is that its already out and sitting on my bench so i could do all new gaskets, oil pump, water pump, thermostat then one weekend swap everything over, also can i get any decent gain out of cleaning the inlet and exhaust ports up with a dremmel

yeh ive heard of 1600 block and 1300 pistons havnt tryed it muself but heard it mentioned a few times.

That rasies the compression. To exactly what ratio I don't remember.

Attacking the head with anything but skill is probably just going to make the motor slower. There are zillions of 'ported' heads lying around in sheds for these things and some of them will be choice.

To build a firebreathing and strong 1600 crossflow will be in the order of $8k -$12k. A somewhat improved one (fully freshened) can probably be done for about $1.5-$2k if you can find the right bits at the right price.

By way of example my NA 1500 pre-crossflow is delivering more than double the original horsepower - but it is an expensive time bomb.

Is your existing motor worn out?

the engine thats in the escort at the moment is spitting heaps of oil out the top of the rocker cover and is also running like a pile of snot down low but i know the cortina motor was a mint runner when i pulled it out,............around about what sort of money would i be looking at to get the head ported?

This is what it cost me for the head work on my 1600 escort motor:

Supply & fit hardened inserts x 4 158.00

Strip & clean head 18.00

Bead blast & acid clean head 32.00

Crack test head 24.00

Reface valves 28.00

Reface Seats 38.00

Reface head 40.00

Clean & assy 44.00

Oversize valves 105.00

Port & polish & match to manifolds 200.00

Double Valve Springs 193.00

============================================

Total $963.33

That was by a place called Chris Carrick Reconditioners. There are photos in my build up page, might find some other interesting info too.

well the plan is just to do these few things and paint the motor up so she looks all good and that way i should have a reliable little car with a bit more power its only really to get me to school and back and any other money i have will go on the cortina

There is millions of hours in doing the 1600 head because of the material its made of.

I reakon for a little bit more power for cheap do...

A cam from snow in Palmy $240 ready to go

32/36 off a cortina etc.. prob free if ya got one lying round.

extractors ... already got some???

and if ya can be arsed get the flywheel lightened.

Thatd be a bit more powerfull than standard and be pretty cheap to do.

yup i have the carb and extractors will also be looking into a full 2inch exhaust the engineer at dads work said he would lighten the flywheel for a box of beers aparently the cam in the escort at the moment is a mild one but it must be very mild because ya cant hear a cam at all so miight look into something a bit more lumpy what sort of cam should i be going for?

^ Kent A2 grind.

Don't be fooled by a smooth idle. My race car idles smoothly and it has a cam that would smash your standard valve train to glitter in 30 seconds.

Lumpy idle with a hot camshaft is a thing of the past

Yer bro. go to the stockcar nationals. Peter Rees' 3.8 V6 commodore (carbed) approx 350hp sounds bone stock......
