Raizer
Sounds like a early mk1 strut. Drop the mk1 insert into the mk2 strut so you can run the old tops

QCADTA
Sounds like you might have to get some new shocks mate. Youll also need a mk2 steering rack as the tie rod ends are different size, plus mk 2 are metric where as mk 1 is imperial so cant just buy new tie rod ends and put them on ya mk 1 rack. Also, from memory ya can drill the tophats but best answer is new shoocks

d.p.n.s
well in the end i used a mk2 steering rack with mk2 sport struts i had bought new shocks and had them machened down to keep the lowered spings captive and i got them to make the tops thinner to fit the mk1 hats. dan
