lowlancer
Roll 91 due to being cheap cunt, then chucked 95 in the other day, doesn't pink at all under load compared to its current state. Pretty sure it'll blow soon
Gaz
Cheers Nismo thats a good little read.
nismo.capri
so the spark plug 'sparks' then as it comes to tdc the rest of the fuel blows up? shouldnt there be minimal unburnt fuel left after the spark? Nope, under power an engine should be running a bit rich, about 12:1 This is to keep things cooler as runing at stoichiometric (14.7:1) will make the most heat and can melt the pistons
Hemi
i think what its saying is instead of a gentle push its like being hit by a car in terms of combustion rate my ute pinks under load , however i cant be fucked fixing it and only at full load under 2000rpm in 3rd upwards .. meh
CaMpylobacter
lots of engines will detonate at high load low rpm situations, especially high powered numbers.
peteretep
ah ok so if your car was using water injection this wouldnt happen in theory as there would be no petrol left over?
nismo.capri
ah ok so if your car was using water injection this wouldnt happen in theory as there would be no petrol left over? Yes but no... the water turning to steam sucks heat from the combustion chamber and reduces the chance of detonation and pre ignition. fuel
the pinking you hear is not the detonation which causes the damage - it's the detonation you can't hear which does

fuel
Well after seeing your piston ringlands like they are I would say it was from running on too low octane, in combination with too higher ignition timing, or possibly a wack air/fuel ratio leaning out in some areas of the rev range. NewGuy
So my best way would be to get a professional tune?
fuel
probably a good idea if you want to ensure your engine doesn't melt pistons like it did before.

NewGuy - I really think that after all the money that has been spent on this awesome car you should spend a little bit more and get someone experienced to set it up properly - timing, mixture and valve clearances are all critical on a motor like that so choose your mechanic carefully. kpr
95 is rude. = about 15psi on my front wheeler starlet. then its octane limited. on 98 it'l run 20psi (maybe more havent pushed it any futher) and make at least 30kw more. i listen for detonation on a home made detset. works good
