Cortina Cambelt

Hi, Im doing a bit of head work on a mk 5 2L corty, is it worthwhile cahanging the cambelt? I have a haynes manual for the car which says the belts are strong and dont tend to strech considerably and that only if the motor is getting a complete overhaul (which it isnt) it dosnt need to be changed, is this true?

The belt appears to be in ok condition although it has a very small minor amount of fraying along one edge over about 100mm aprox.

How long ago was it done if you dunno I would change it. I did a roll back on this steep hill one day in my old Escort and it striped the teeth off the belt at high revs  I cranked it and thought oh no that don't sound good poped the hood looked at it cranked it a few more times eventually noticed the cam pully was'nt moveing  engine was all good though.

Cheers guys, im going to do the belt, just wasnt sure why the haynes manual recomend leaving it until a complete overhaul? seems stupid as the belt may well stretch and or break although the manual states otherwise.

Non interferance motor, so its not a real biggie if it breaks

yeh do it ay, cheap as and saves you getting a tow home on the back of a truck if the teeth get stripped off it like what happend on mine. only took me the best part of an hour to replace it and have it running again. id tend to not do the tensioner unless you really had to or could get one off another engine, i went to a few shops to get quotes for one, couple of hundy at places like bnt appco etc for some odd reason repco gave me a quote for 80, when it came up on their computers as 350 or some bs amount.
