Draizuh
You probably dont need to worry about certification & stuff either. Only if you WOF guy doesnt relise its a 1600 or doesnt care. i think its 20% displacement increase and you needa cert. My old WOF guy is also a Cert guy. You need to either drop the compression a little bit by machining chambers, or buy forgies for 2g. Or decomp head gasket perhaps. yeah but the block only sits an inch higher. so you wouldnt really know unless your into escorts. but then msot mechanics probably are hah

jinx
Get the front struts and diff froma Mk2 1600 sport as the diff is alot stroger and can handle the power. Not true. The english escort diffs we have here are all the same. The only difference is the ratios, the axles are no different and there is no strength difference in the centres. Even the anglias use the same diff centre - the 4.444:1 from these is commonly used in escort rally cars with no real problems.
Guest Alfa Addict
Yeah I agree,My old 2 ltr esky did over 200 burnouts or donuts, before it blew. No shit,it really did ,we thought it must have been a record of sorts at the time. So we rolled down the hill to the workshop & one hour later ( 2 guys going hard) we were out doing it again with a new diff.
Jerm
yeah i don't that 1600 pinto s ump thing is true.... on ething that is though ... i think ... is the pinto from capris fit sweet... cos they are the ones with the different sump... i think the front suspension is much the same as a mk2 eskie
Bistro
i dont think so bro.. mine hasnt been picked up ever!mind you, i seem to always come across islander, indian and asian mechies or just plain munters yea, thats why i said "doesnt relise or doesn't care". but with the power of cars now-a-days, changing from a standy 1300 to a standy 1600 probably wont be noticed by your wof guy if he drives it either. jinx
Jerm capri suspension is better than escort - if for nothing else than the spring seats are 1" lower... You also get a little more camber. Pretty much the same otherwise. Bistro good point - these days a little tweak on a boost controller will do considerably more than the change from 1300cc to 1600cc... even 1300cc to 2000cc really... The difference is the axle size, most diffs have the small axles the GT cortina has bigger axles but the 1600 sport has the biggest. if you want a 4.44:1 diff you will find them in an escort panel van. RT
[quote name="Alfa Addict" but my feeling was that the 2 litre is a week engine & many that have been worked have not lasted. The 1600 is much more durable & easier to work on ' date=' & IMO has more untapped power than a 2 litre. [/quote] ..I wasn't upset. I just thought this comment was unjustified. From my experience the 2L is strong as an ox, many worked ones last for ages, it is just as easy to work on as a 1600 and has more untapped power. So..basically the opposite of your opinion lol But in regards to dreadedretard, you're probably right, the 1600 would be easier upgrade to a 1300. Thats exactly what I did for my GF's escort. (So I'm not so biased huh) I just threw in a 1600 and you don't need a cert and it goes heaps better. As for the size doesn't matter thing, of course! I've been in some wickedly quick 1300s. Just look at this one! http://www.retrotech.co.nz/SR_article.html

davidian
i have seen a couple of mk 4/5 cortinas with 1.6s in them ive even seen a blue cortina with factory 1.3 badges, i swear. dont know how genuine tho but it was a standy one in average cond
Toucan
My 1600 is out of a cortina but its not a pinto so I guess it must have been out of an earlier cortina, mk1-
Jerm
not sure aye... cos mk1s were all prexflow i think.. the mean one was the 1500GT not sure about the mk2s though... could possibly even be out of a mk3? You might want to look for a later head though... cos all the mk2 escort and soem mk1 ones had bigger valves and followers and some other small differences i think... mkcortina
the MK2 had the 1600 xflow but there are a few differences 1. the sump and pick up the cortina bowl is in the front and the escort is in the rear. 2. the dip stick in the cortina is in the front and in the escort its in the rear. The best 1600 xflow to get is 1 from a 1600 sierra which was built in south africa.which has a xflow instead of a pinto. these are the newist 1600 built, so hopefully there is less rust, also it alot thicker and the the heads are stronger.ppl try and get them when they are building a formula ford engine. Also it comes with electronic ignition "no crappy points that dont like 7500rpm". "stupid me i found 1 at pick a part and i only took the dissy, and the next day when i found out how good the engine was i went back and it was gone! #*%#! i cound of got it for $100"
Burntrubber
My Dad had a Mk5 Cortina with a 1600 pinto had the badges and all. Changed it for a 2l. Few years later we put a 2l in my Mk2 panelvan we used the sump off the 1600 fit better than the 2l one. As for diffs stardard escort ones are weak I went thru at least 4 with a pretty stock 2l. The original van one lasted the longest I think.
Bistro
sierras came out with 1600 pintos. the only escort with 1600 pintos were the mk2 Mexicos. Ive always had a soft spot for them.....Mexicos not the sierras

Gaz
How long the diff last for burnouts is how good you are at them. You dump the clutch to hard hooking second or 1st or dont have both wheels spinning its putting alot more stress on the diff. Do it right and it'll last for ages. Not for ever unfortunatly tho. The escort blocks with 70sumthng written on them is the best one ive heard. Have one in the garage ready to rebuild for my next escort project. Pushrod
the MK2 had the 1600 xflow 1quote] The first Mk2 cortinas came out with prexflows also Mk1 capris came out with xflows also but this may have changed during production I cant remember. Check the block number and you will be able to tell what it's out of
