carnut1100
its kinda pissing me off, but carnut keeps turning posts into car history in NZkeep it on topic please My sincere and deep apologies if I have caused you any offense. That was not my intention, and I didn't come on this board to annoy anybody. I am just curious about the old car situation in NZ, as it seems to be quite a bit different from the one here in Australia and as I am moving over there in a few months it is naturally of some interest to me. I will try not to ask questions which may drag a post off topic in the future.

trunk-rattlin
i have the same prob as you jerm. you gotta show me a pick of ur escort some stage. I would definatley go for a 5spd if you regulary do go for drives in the country. not a celica 5spd?
Baxter
Yeah the Serria 5-speed fits in the tunnel with a couple of bashes in the right places. and now for a bit of history In fact I believe the original factory rally sport manual reccomended this as the official modification to fit the ZF 5-speed in! Jerm
yeah i'll post some picks up soon as it has been painted.... yeah i was thinking sierra five speed... but it makes your speedo really inaccurate to.... and there are a few other small probs to i think... Stacov
I recently put a serria 5speed in my mk5 cortina and the 4speed had way more power but only downside was the engine screamed now with the 5speed in their i can barely even hear the engine when doing over 100 all i hear now is the exhaust lol. Cant tell ya what revs its doing because i dont have a rev counter hehe. I must get one but yeah i did notice a big power loss from changing over to the 5speed but then again my engine is not really moded atm only extractors/bored&honed. Just got ahold of another 2.0L cortina motor so ill be fully working that then chucking it in once im finished then maybe chuck the 2.0L engine thats in the cortina atm into a eskie
jinx
Cortina radiators fit in with only a little work on the hoses. They are taller but use the same mounting pattern and pipe positions. If doing this it's a good time to ditch the std fan and fit an electric one to the front... For driveshafts you can use the mk2 escort 2pc auto driveshaft with the 5 speed - fits perfectly in my mk2 2L 5spd wagon. As far as Stacov mentioned with the power loss when changing boxes - the 5 speed sierra box and the earlier 4 speed cortina boxes have exactly the same ratio's (apart from the obvious 5 gear...). To correct the speedo readings in an esky a 3.54:1 diff centre (1600 sport and ghia) should bring it to within about 6%. It'll turn the car into more of a cruiser though but with the extra torque of the 2L it's still quick!!
Jerm
thanks man... don't the wagons have a longer wheel base though?... your wagon sounds mean .. got any pics? does it go hard? how hard? what did you do about the sump? apparent;y you can just mount the engine a bit higher?....
jinx
It's still only half built and looks very ugly (white with a very recently removed tan vinyl roof...). The wagon has the same wheel base but the body is a couple of inches longer and about an inch higher. I cheated with the sump - swapped a mint mk1 round headlight grill for one from aussie. Got the pick-up, dipstick and sump. Bolts in very nicely with the pommie alloy mounts. I wanted the engine low to keep the centre of gravity as low as possible. Would still like the car to handle with the huge increase in weight up front. X-flow engine is approx 75kg, pinto is 130... Have fitted 15"x6" superlites, full nolathane, anti-dive kit, quickrack, capri struts, sport rear brakes and dash so far. Still finishing the trans tunnel after fitting the engine and box. nismo.capri
The trans tunnel on the manuals is smaller than the auto trans tunnel on escorts but the 5speed still fits, there just isnt as much room around it, and you might have to cut or dent a few bits here and there.. no biggie.. 5 gears is worth the effort. Yep, you describe my van install to a T. Gave it some very minor persuading with a small crowbar

Shifter will be held on with 3 torx bolts.

Its got the same bellhousing pattern so no need to worry aswell Pure
