  1. So I have finally decided to document my twin rotor Wankel engine project. Years ago I saw the video below of the twin O.S. Wankel engined R/C tractor pull car and thought that was the coolest thing since sliced bread. Fast forward a few years and I saw a twin rotor O.S. Wankel based engine in the YouTube thread, which has been the crux of this project. The engine build by ‘20B’ combined two O.S. Wankel PI’s together with a custom machined centre and rear housing, in addition to an oil hardened 4140 eccentric shaft. Unfortunately the only video of it running is the one below and the project thread stagnated years ago due to a crushed bearing. It wasn’t the only twin rotor project, as avid model engine collector Miguel de Rancougne had another O.S. Wankel PI based engine in his possession as seen below in a Christies auction handbook. http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/lot/a-twin-rotor-wankel-engine-4223480-details.aspx?intObjectID=4223480 Both 20B’s and Miguel de Rancougne’s twin rotor miniature Wankel engines provided enough reason for me to attempt to make one myself. So in March 2014 I purchased a brand new O.S. Wankel PII with the aim to build a two rotor with my friend Ben who happened to purchase a used PII from rotary mad Puerto Rico. The idea was that we would test run both engines then pull apart his engine and CAD model it. The parts required would be additively manufactured on the universities recently acquired selective laser melting machine prior to sanding smooth. To test this theory a single rotor and eccentric shaft were manufactured from a CAD model off GrabCad in AlSi10Mg aluminium alloy. With the surface finish of the parts worse than predicted and lack of a ferrous metal powder for the machine I decided to focus on building the test table for the engines.
  2. Loving this build. Top notch work!!
  3. For those who can't make it.
  4. Hot damn! Looking sweet!! Cage or no cage? Was this a one lady owner car? I seem to recall being offered a brown auto before getting mine years ago. Are you keeping the boot chrome? I know of a home if you want to sell
  5. I'm liking this. Loving the slot mags and colour. Can't wait to see it alongside the Spitfire in its army green glory.
  6. Even more jealous now. RX-792P and RX7 GTO in attendance https://grrc.goodwood.com/festival-of-speed/mazda-at-fos-its-not-all-about-the-787b-you-know?utm_source=The+Goodwood+Estate+Company+Ltd&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=5813310_MSI+Grr+12+june&utm_content=MAZDA+at+FOS&dm_i=1QLU,3GLKU,GQZE9C,CDY36,1 Mattwho? get lots of pics and warm up videos, thx. EDIT- Entry list https://cdn.gwsrv.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Whos-Driving-What-2015-v4.pdf
  7. Ok ok. I'll attend the tour. I shall check if a tour of the workshop is all sweet and get back to you.
  8. Yup I got it wrong. But the shifter will be very far back once lowered into place, no?
  9. It is mounted to the engine. http://www.classic-ford.org/cfp/tm.aspx?m=1704&mpage=6
  10. This is the issue with the Mazda gearbox:
  11. 240hp Duratec with a standard 4 speed Escort gearbox and it hasnt broken? Something doesn't add up. Another alternative is the Tremec T5 gearbox, but you would need to get the one with the right input shaft. I am in the same position with my Duratec. A never ending search...
  12. Yeah pretty much this. The acid etchs the martensitic phase of the steel (work hardened section) creating a dark patch when viewed under light. It looks like Nital is a common etchant too - http://www.etchantstore.com/Forensic-Etchants_c10.htm Also, this place sells metallographic etchants - http://www.pauling.co.nz/home
  13. Fry's reagent is noted as being a popular option. From: Restoration of Vehicle Identification Numbers - R. Kuppuswamy, M. Senthilkumar http://search.proquest.com/docview/194803640?pq-origsite=gscholar
  14. This is what I'd expect. Most links just say an acid etch with a voltage applied. As it's mild steel etchants such as Ferric Chlorride or Nitric come to mind. The article here - http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2090536X12000809, suggested the following etchant: Ferric chloride 25 g, conc. HCl 25 ml, distilled water 100 ml Continuous application for 20-40min Alternatively if it can be removed you could used EBSD with a Scanning Electron Microscope - http://phys.org/news/2015-02-crystal-pattern-recover-obliterated-serial.html
  15. Looking good rusti. That pic abouve is the business. If your short on grinding discs I'm sure I could lend you a couple. What engine are you planning to run? The T 4 cyl with cop spec head would be sweet
  16. Park at the Atrium. Buy lunch and hold your receipt and parking is free. http://www.atriumonelliott.co.nz/carpark.htm
  17. Too true. Also, go straight for the pits to avoid the masses. It's such a good event I'd contemplate flying there and back just for the weekend.
  18. It's a batcall for you to attend rusti. You will find out at the specified time and place
  19. Will there be a discussion on rising house prices in China? Including supply and demand graphs?
  20. Looking sweet dude. Loving the carbs.
  21. Disappoint. Good turnout again and Simon was there.
  22. I would suggest annealing after hot working back into shape.if cracking is a concern then crack test them prior to hot working. Without seeing a picture there is a good chance that they are ok. I would still but new if they exist as cast iron technology (spherical cast iron) has improved greatly and it's the safest way. Dave start a metallurgy thread if you want more discussions.
  23. Looking good! That gold 4 door is damn nice. Where did you get the pedal box from? There has been a bit of an issue with the UK pedal boxes as they are made of thinner gauge steel than standard.
  24. OH YEAH!! Z31's are boss Do this:
  25. Why did you guys not say hi? haha Yeah i saw the dude in the Rotron hat and was gonna chase him down for a yarn but he must have left early. For a first event it couldn't have gone better. Huge turnout and some cool prizes. Gotta get more OS rotaries at it next year.
